At first glance, many probably think that the food on these saucers is drawn, and that this is an interesting design decision by the artist. But an experienced eye will notice that this food seems somehow strange, as if it exactly repeats something that you have already seen. Indeed, the food on these plates, being real, exactly replicates the famous works of contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and others.
Getting used to the absolutely stunning design solutions of various artists related to dishes, such as tattoos on plates and cups, you get used to the fact that all the work carried out by designers in this area is related to drawing. But it was not there. A craftsman named Erwin Bauer created these works for restaurants and hotels at Mumok, a museum of modern art located in the Austrian city of Vienna.
In 2009, this project by Erwin received an award-winning European Design Award. Deservedly so, because it is not so easy to fully embody in reality what the famous works of contemporary artists are. If still lifes are usually painted from real objects, for example, the same plates and food, then in this case the finished paintings are transformed into real objects. Something like a still life in reverse.
Even those who are not very well versed in art have heard something about at least a couple of artists whose work Erwin Bauer used. Here it is: Andy Warhol, Hermann Nitsch, Christo, Jackson Pollock, Joseph Beuys, Piet Mondrian, Yves Klein.
These lovely saucers are just one of the many varied designs by Erwin Bauer and his agency. Many of them can be found on his website.
