Two bright talents met on the stage, starred together in films that bring both world fame. She was in love with him selflessly and, knowing that he adored white, she always dressed in white. And he never tired of repeating her that she was "the mother of his films."
Raj Kapoor
Raj Kapoor was and remains a legend in Indian cinema. Both in his acting career and in directing, he reached unprecedented heights and raised the cinema of his homeland to the level of world cinema. And, as usually happens, a creative person had his own muse, which inspired him to great achievements. Raj Kapoor was born into a creative family in 1924 in Peshawar, then India, now Pakistan.
My grandfather was an actor by profession, and my father ran a theater in Bombay when he moved there with his family. And to his children, Raju and his brothers, he instilled a love of creativity. Raj studied acting at his father's theater. By the way, the father made increased demands on his son, as a good teacher should. Raj has mastered several professions in the theater, not only the profession of an actor.
Nargis
The future star of Indian cinema was born on June 1, 1929 in Bombay. The story of her parents' wedding is romantic: the future husband was a Hindu, he converted to Islam in order to marry his chosen one, actress and singer Jaddanbai. The daughter who was born was named Fatima Rashid, and Nargis is a pseudonym invented by the director of the film "Destiny". She made her film debut in 1943 at the age of 14. Fatima-Nargis did not plan to become an actress, but life brought her on this very path.
Meeting and Collaboration
Raj and Nargis first met by accident, in 1945 in Bombay. Young Kapoor came to her mother Jaddanbai at the request of his father. The door was opened by a charming girl. It turned out to be Nargis. The first joint film for Raj Kapoor and Nargis was the film "Sizzling Passion", where they had the main roles. Raj Kapoor is the director and screenwriter. When filming the film, the young director faced many difficulties.
But in many ways, yes, perhaps, honestly, to say that Nargis helped in all matters. It can be noted that the film would not have taken place without her help. Serious passions boiled not only on the screen, but also behind the scenes. Nargis and Raj often argued and even quarreled over many issues. But then they still found common ground. And an incredibly attractive couple appeared on the screen, which together can overcome any obstacles in life.
The next film was the "Rainy Season", where, again, they played together. But the film "The Tramp" brought real worldwide fame to Kapoor. The romantic poor man and his beautiful girlfriend conquered not only India, but also many countries of the world. Of course, when you see such complete unanimity and understanding on the screen, such a magnetic attraction, and from film to film, it is hard to believe that the main characters are connected by nothing but work.
There were many rumors about their romance. Naturally, the Raj denied them: he himself had long been married to his relative Krishna Malhotra and had three children. And Nargis was unmarried. In the then India, such novels, to put it mildly, were not welcomed.
The plots of the films were quite simple, if not primitive, but the Raj-Nargis duet and wonderful music brought them unprecedented success. Not only in India but also abroad. And mainly this charming and harmonious couple brought success.
Nargis was the symbol of the Raj Kapoor studio, his inspiration and assistant. One frame from their joint film was taken as the basis for the studio's logo. Raj was very fond of white, and Nargis began to dress in white more often. She even got a nickname - "the woman in white." By the way, many seriously believed that Nargis was the wife of Raj Kapoor.
In 1956, they came to Soviet Azerbaijan and in their memories of this visit they wrote that Kapoor came with his wife Nargis. Perhaps not everyone even guessed that the real wife was Krishna. The duo Raj and Nargis became the best romantic film pair of Indian cinema of the time. And, perhaps, in general for the entire period of the existence of the Indian film industry.
Parting
Raj Kapoor and Nargis have been inseparable for 10 years, filming together. They have released 16 great films together.
Nargis was in love with Raj Kapoor. Knowing that he adores white, Nargis always dressed in white, and she was even called "The Lady in White". Kapoor recalled:
It is said that Raj Kapoor used this scene in his film Bobby, which means that this beautiful film became a kind of monument to Nargis. In an interview, Raj Kapoor admitted: "".
However, Nargis wanted something more. But Kapoor did not want to divorce his wife and in 1956 they separated; their last film together was the musical melodrama Chori Chori.
But together with Raj there were no prospects for personal life for Nargis. She announced to Kapoor that she was leaving him. She explained her departure by the fact that their duet was tired of the audience, and it was time to change creative perspectives. As an actress, she naturally wanted to change her role and play something more serious. But, judging by the love of the audience, nobody was tired of their duet and the audience was ready to accept a dozen more similar films. Rather, she was tired of fruitless waiting … In 1955, Nargis starred in the film "Mother India", in the tragic role of an abandoned and deceived woman forced to earn a living for herself and her two sons.
This film, already without Raj Kapoor, brought her great fame, she became a symbol of India. But Raj did not immediately come to terms with the fact that Nargis left him. During the filming of the film, rumors spread about the romance between Nargiz and Sunil Dutt, her partner. Raj even visited their mutual friend to find out if these rumors were true. Everything became clear quickly enough. After filming, Sunil proposed to Nargis. They merried. They had three children.
Nargis decided to end her acting career and only appeared in films a few times. She fulfilled her dream of a family and children. But was she happy without Kapoor? Who knows … Nargis died in 1981 from cancer.
Raj Kapoor has collected all the prizes and awards imaginable and unthinkable. There have been successes and failures in his creative career. He starred beautiful talented actresses. But such a fantastic tandem as with Nargis did not work out.
Raj Kapoor died on June 2, 1988 in Delhi, after being presented with the most prestigious award in India. The whole country mourned him.
India is a country with an interesting culture, including a modern one. Recently the clip of the representatives of the Indian caste of untouchables became a hit on the Internet.
