The exploitation of child labor is punishable by law. But in third world countries, most often this bill is bypassed and adolescents continue to be used in the most difficult jobs. Photographer Narendra Shrestha has created a series of photographs illustrating the exploitation of child labor in Nepal.
After the photographs appeared on the pages of print media, the government of the country carried out a raid to identify underage workers at construction sites and freed 124 children from grueling labor.
More than half of the identified children were under 15 years old. Some of them are young girls. As statistics show, children of emigrants most often find themselves at construction sites, who help their parents to get on their feet in a foreign country. To do this, they have to remove construction debris, move bricks, stir the mortar. Many end up in hospital after several months of exhausting labor, some are injured at work.
This situation has long caused violent protests among residents of Nepal and other countries. After all, children are our future, and their protection is imperative for modern society. Photographer Erik Ravelo even created a photo shoot dedicated to childhood problems and fears.
