“Kings can do everything” one well-known song assures us. Whether this is true or not is a moot point, but the fact that kings can draw is for sure, and the Chinese artist Gu Yingzhi, who descends from the royal dynasty of King, is the best confirmation of this. It is not so much her origin that makes her famous, but her talent: for the skillful portrayal of cats in China, the artist is rightfully called the "Queen of Cats", and her fame as the best of the best in the gohua technique thunders all over the world!
Guohua (which means "painting of our country") is a traditional Chinese ink painting on wet paper or silk. It traces its history from the third - second centuries BC and was created with the aim of opposing eastern culture to the culture of the West. Usually, in paintings made in this style, artists write lines from poems.
Belonging to the royal dynasty, Gu Yingzhi naturally received an excellent upbringing and education, from childhood she was fond of poetry and calligraphy, which played a huge role in her future artistic achievements. The artist entered the Taiwan University of Arts and Crafts, where she studied Western art and received an excellent training. Perhaps it was the training that laid the foundations for realism, which add a twist to Gu Yingzhi's traditional style.
Gu Yingzhi has her own little room where she can play with her furry pets for a long time, observe their habits and draw. The artist says that sometimes she even "forgets herself and completely immerses herself in the world of cats." Her works are very elegant, the images of cats seem to "breathe" with some special, almost romantic charm. She draws not "for the sake of drawing, but in order to express her feelings and emotions, most of the time it takes to select and write the desired verse."
Now Gu Yingzhi's works adorn the offices of many politicians around the world (Chinese ambassadors made the artist's canvases a traditional gift for foreign leaders) and are exhibited in galleries around the world. In addition to drawing, she is also engaged in social work: the artist is the director of many state art academies and schools (in China and Taiwan), a member of the Chinese calligraphic society.
Unfortunately, Gu Yingzhi does not have a website, but there are a lot of works by the artist on the Internet.
