More than three hundred years ago, Peter I issued a famous decree, according to which the boyars, noblemen and merchants had to "adopt" the European lifestyle: dress in accordance with Western European fashion, and also shave off their beards. History knows many paradoxes: the modern owners of luxurious mustaches and beards are Europeans. They are happy to demonstrate their "manhood" at the annual Beard and Mustache Championship … This year, in a competition held in the town of Witterdorf (France), more than a hundred bearded men took part.
Last year, the best beards and mustaches in the world could be seen in Norway, then the highlight of the event was the beard-sculpture of the multiple winner of such competitions, 47-year-old German hairdresser Elmar Weisser. At the current championship in France, special attention was also paid to styling beards: some twisted beards with tongs or curlers, others used scotch tape and all kinds of clamps, and still others did braids and plaits. Weisser managed to really surprise the judges this year too, from his beard a whole composition was created in the form of a crane in a nest.
As a rule, the participants "complement" the mustache and beard with themed outfits: there were many sailors, military men, pirates and farmers at the championship. Perhaps the key to the success of this annual championship is the friendly atmosphere that prevails among the extravagant participants. After all, each of them remembers the testament of the ancient Roman poet Ovid: "The husband is handsome with a beard and prickly stubble on his body."
