Imagine a large screen with arms waving, different poses and people jumping. What do you think they do? You can guess anything, but you’ll hardly guess that in fact, this is how drawings are created. After all, this is “body painting”, a new performance from Mehmet Akten.
Body Paint is an interactive installation and performance that allows people to paint with their bodies on a virtual canvas and then receive an interpretation of their gestures and dances in the form of separate images. Special software analyzes movements captured by infrared cameras in real time and converts them into brush strokes of various colors and shades.
The installation can work simultaneously with any number of people and, depending on this, produce drawings of various sizes. The interaction is very simple - movement creates a drawing. But in the apparent simplicity, many subtle and elusive details are hidden. The various aspects of movement: sweep, speed, acceleration, curvature - all these affect the final result and, transforming into strokes, spots, streaks and spirals, forces the audience to be inventive in their movements.
Although an installation may well work with one person, it is still much more interesting when several people are trying to draw at the same time. The interaction of viewers with each other through a virtual drawing is quite curious: some try to coordinate their actions in the hope of drawing a common image; others, on the contrary, try to hinder each other in the implementation of the conceived idea.
Mehmet Akten is a visual artist, musician and interactive designer dedicated to creating emotional and memorable work. Using programming as the main instrument of his creativity, Mehmet develops technologies for creating new instruments and explores alternative ways of presenting visual images and sound.
