Lev Landau, a genius physicist, had several scientific theories on his account, and among them was the life theory of happiness. He built in accordance with this theory not only his own life, but also subordinated it to the life of the only woman for whom he experienced true feelings. Later, Kora Drobantseva-Landau will write a book about her life with an outstanding scientist. She will overcome her bashfulness and try to figure out why Landau's theory made him the happiest, and her humiliatedly unhappy.
The first steps
They met at a ball at Kharkov University. A tall, slender young man looked admiringly at the charming girl. The name with which he introduced himself seemed unusual to her, but the young man explained: Dau is a nickname, his name is Leo, but the name does not at all correspond to his character. Friends left only the last three letters of Landau's surname, and now he considers the nickname much better and more expressive than the real name.
Landau did not like dancing, but he did not leave Cora all evening because of the simple fear that such a beauty would certainly be taken away. The evening was wonderful, communication was easy, and the name of the new acquaintance had long been known in scientific circles.
They celebrated their graduation from the university, although there was still a whole year before the defense of the diploma. Many went to undergraduate internships, and the students decided to celebrate their graduation in advance. Cora went to work at the chocolate factory the very next day.
Landau accompanied her home and asked permission to visit her the next evening. At exactly seven in the evening, he rang her doorbell. True, Cora's sister opened the door for him, the girl herself at that time was trying to put herself in order after a hard day. When she appeared in the room, Dau again, like the day before, froze with delight. He joked and compliments tirelessly.
Cora herself did not notice how she fell in love with this extraordinary young man. Dow was very different from all her previous fans. After graduating from school, the girl entered the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, but was forced to flee Kiev a year later. She was carried away by a young man who carried weapons everywhere and literally forced Cora to marry him. The student entered the Kharkov University, and after a very short time she found out: her annoying boyfriend shot himself while intoxicated.
Later she herself got married, but the marriage lasted only six months. Her husband loved himself more than anything in the world, admired himself in the morning and gladly responded to the attention of the opposite sex.
Landau charmed her not only with his attention. He possessed some incredible charisma, it was interesting to communicate with him, and his enthusiasm for the business was simply amazing.
Happiness theory, trouble time
When they first kissed, Cora fainted for a moment. When she came to, she was surprised to find that Dau had simply run away. He himself later explained that he was simply cowardly. She was his first woman, with her he first kissed.
For a long time there was nothing between them but kisses, and then both of them were covered with a wave of passion. Cora was happy with him, but instead of the long-awaited marriage proposal, one day she heard from a loved one the theory that marriage has nothing to do with feelings in general and love in particular. She still had to try to understand and accept his theory of happiness.
When the arrests of scientists began in Kharkov in 1937, Kora and Dau decided to leave him for Moscow. Landau was invited to work by Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa. Dow left and began to write her letters, tender, saturated with love and all the same theory of happiness. Dow confessed: if he meets a beautiful girl, he will certainly start an affair with her. And he did not deny Kore the right to do the same.
The girl was jealous so desperately that sometimes she could not hide her emotions even in letters. He began to educate his Crust and expressed his thoughts quite harshly. Landau sincerely considered jealousy to be one of the basest human feelings. After such a rebuke, Kore had to be sick in order to hide her emotional state.
At the end of April 1938, Landau was arrested on charges of anti-Soviet activities. He came out a year after his arrest thanks to a letter from Pyotr Kapitsa, asking to release the scientist under his guarantee.
Cora was tormented all year and did not believe that she would ever see Dau again. According to his theory of happiness, she could have a romance, especially since she had enough fans. But she loved Dau and she didn't need anyone else.
Free love
For another year after the release of Landau, they were separated. He wrote letters to her, invariably describing the girls he met. And each letter ended with the conclusion that Cora is the best. In 1940, the girl moved to Landau in Moscow. But shortly before the wedding, Landau proposed to Kore to accept the "Pact on non-aggression in married life." Each of them was allowed to have affairs on the side. Cora promised not to be jealous and not to walk with a sour look, so as not to make her husband unhappy.
For a time, Landau's mistresses existed only in theory. At the same time, he was sincerely happy if men paid attention to his wife and even encouraged Cora to flirt and relationships with other men. He himself admitted that it is difficult for him to find a mistress, although he is honestly trying.
And then the mistresses appeared. Landau brought them home, and Cora, a loving wife, only once allowed herself to hide in the closet to hear whether her Dau would confess her feelings to her mistress. After Landau made her apologize for the gross interference in his personal life.
She gave her word never to interfere with him again. She cooked dinner for him and his mistresses, put fresh underwear in his closet for intimate dates and went out for a walk. When Cora was in the last months of her pregnancy, she simply locked herself in her room and waited for the English lock on the front door to click, announcing the departure of her husband's next passion.
She kept her promise not to interfere in his personal life, but she could not cope with jealousy, but she learned to masterfully hide the “base feeling”. Her beloved Daunka did not even know how his wife suffered all her life. And at the same time, she loved Landau to the point of self-forgetfulness. She herself only once tried to have a lover, but at the last moment she refused another man. And she received a heavy slap in the face from him.
With love and after love
When Landau got into an accident in 1962, his life hung in the balance for a long time. Cora forgot about herself, she only thought about how to save him. She herself went to the hospital with a heart attack, then underwent surgery to remove the tumor. And every day I thought only about how Dow was doing. Contrary to all forecasts, he was on the mend. The devoted Cora never left her husband for a moment when he was already at home. And she was happy when Landau seduced a nurse who came to him. He clearly recovered.
Landau passed away on April 1, 1968. And Cora spent another ten years writing her book about life with Landau. When her memoirs were published, Landau's widow was accused of lying and slandering the great scientist. Only his son's testimony put an end to the controversy. Igor Lvovich confirmed: my mother was reconciled with Landau's theory of happiness, but she herself suffered from this all her life.
Cora wanted to leave Landau, but could not. No one would ever be able to take care of him like that, monitor his nutrition and health. After Landau left, her life seemed to have lost its meaning. But she was writing the book as if she was re-living her life with Dau. And I finished it and somehow immediately began to hurt. And soon she also left …
Pyotr Kapitsa played an important role in the life of Lev Landau. He lived with his wife Anna Krylova for almost 60 years. There have been ups and downs in their lives, government support, and a long period of disgrace. But Pyotr Kapitsa and Anna Krylova, no matter what happened, were always together, they stood shoulder to shoulder under the blows of life's storms and invariably won.
