France and the United States returned to Egypt several hundred artifacts, antiques, exported from the country. According to representatives of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, almost all of the returned values were found by the so-called "black archaeologists." Some of the artifacts were stolen, apparently by assistants to scientific workers, at quite legal excavations.
A shipment of 240 artifacts was airlifted to Cairo airport from France. Values belong to a wide variety of historical periods, but most, according to archaeologists, date from the Hellenistic period and the period of Roman rule in Egypt.
Recall that a few days ago, another return of contraband artifacts from the United States was delivered to Egypt. Local experts donated 380 ancient objects to their homeland, all of them also belong to the most different periods. The scholars added that both premises contain very valuable samples that are important for historical science.
The return of the artifacts became possible immediately after the experts from France and the United States managed to establish the authenticity of the confiscated antiques. All returned values will soon be exhibited in museums in Egypt, some will be handed over to scientific groups for study.
Black archeology, unfortunately, has long been a sad practice for countries like Egypt. This business is flourishing in Asia, as well as in South and Central America. The worst thing is that sometimes "archaeologists" extract values in a barbaric way that is unacceptable for the scientific method. They damage the historical soil layers, which are very important for true archaeologists when studying artifacts. And this is not to mention the fact that in the course of "black" excavations, the artifacts themselves often suffer. There are also outright acts of vandalism, when whole fragments, for example, with letters, are cut out of ancient monuments.
