October 15 (October 28, new style) marks 96 years since the sinking (1914-15-10) of the Russian cruiser Zhemchug off the coast of Malaysia, more precisely off the island of Penang.

Early in the morning of October 15, the German cruiser Emdem entered Penang, which, as his senior officer Helmut von Mücke claimed in his memoirs, hoped to find the French armored cruisers Montcalm and Duplex here and attack them while at anchor. The Germans undertook a military trick: they installed a fourth false tarpaulin pipe (in order to pass for the allied British cruiser Yarmouth in case of poor visibility). The French destroyer "Muske", which carried a security service, fell for this trick and let the Germans into the bay, even giving the "go-ahead" with a light signal. in the bay for minor repairs …. Within 10 minutes, the Russian cruiser was sunk by heavy fire from all onboard German guns. 88 sailors were killed. On May 13, 2010, at the initiative of the Russian Embassy in Malaysia, for the first time in 96 years, a memorial service was served for the dead sailors. The funeral service was served by Father Alexander. I was lucky enough to take part in this wonderful event. Impressed, I painted this picture:
