Briton Ben Wilson - an eccentric, what else you need to look for. Judge for yourself: he explores the streets of London in search of gum, and then turns it into a kind of work of street art, remaking a lump adhering to the asphalt into a miniature painting.
Ben has been in this business for six years now, and his job is not as easy as it might seem at first glance. First, he finds a gum spat out by someone: it must be quite old, but still retain a little moisture in it. Then the author heats it up with a burner and varnishes it: this creates a comfortable surface for drawing, and the gum itself becomes stronger. Ben does all these manipulations so that the results of his unusual creativity are more durable and stay on the streets longer.
In each piece, Ben Wilson uses a variety of vibrant colors and tries to depict the smallest details. Believe it or not, it usually takes an author all day to create one small picture! The artist also does not forget to sign his works: from time to time he displays the whole phrase “the chewing gum man” on them, but more often than not there is simply not enough space for this, and Ben is limited to a short “BW”.
Ben actually works on his own, but he also enjoys collaborating with various organizations. For example, the Royal Society of Chemistry of Great Britain recently commissioned 118 drawings on chewing gum - one for each element of the periodic table.
I wonder how passers-by react to Ben Wilson's works: are they starting to throw gum into trash cans or, on the contrary, are they trying to provide the artist with new canvases? Despite the rather cute and funny creativity of the author, I still want to believe that the majority chooses the first option.
