“My body is crying and screaming, but something that is higher than me enjoys life, no matter what!” Maria Bashkirtseva … An unusually gifted personality, she lived a short but active life. Music, painting and literature - Maria found herself in all spheres of art. Her "Diary", written in French, has been translated into many languages of the world, her paintings are exhibited in the Russian Museum. The fate of Mary measured 25 years of her life, most of which she spent in Paris. Contemporaries saw her as a genius, and her creative heritage really gave her immortality.
Maria Bashkirtseva was born on the Gaivorontsy estate of the Poltava province, her father and mother were educated and prosperous people. Maria's childhood passed in the Poltava region, and at the age of 12 she goes with her mother to Europe, since her parents decide to divorce. At this time, the girl begins to keep a diary, it was he who subsequently brought her worldwide fame. In the meantime, this is a way of knowing oneself, fixing one's interests, experiences. "I myself am my own heroine" - such an entry appeared in the "Diary" in 1874.
Throughout her life, Maria was engaged in self-education: she was fond of studying foreign languages (she was fluent in four European languages, read Latin and Ancient Greek), played musical instruments and vocals (she was even predicted to be an opera diva, but her throat and partial deafness by the age of 16), drawing and literature.
Maria studied painting with the artist Rodolfo Julian, his course, designed for 7 years, took two years, working tirelessly, wrote more than 150 paintings and 200 drawings. Bashkirtseva's exhibitions were a success, later critics would say that she could become the "Balzac of Painting".
Glory Bashkirtseva brought "Diary", which she kept until her death. Its publication in France caused a real storm of interest in an outstanding personality, in Russia, on the contrary, it was met with controversy. At the same time, the diary was read by Tolstoy, Chekhov, Khlebnikov, Bryusov. Marina Tsvetaeva highly appreciated the talent of Bashkirtseva, it is to this unbroken artist that the poet's "Evening Album" is dedicated.
Maria had a presentiment that she was doomed to an early death, so as not to upset her family and not to become discouraged herself, she worked tirelessly until the last days of her life. She wrote a lot, visited a friend and mentor, the artist Jules Bastien-Lepage, who was sick with cancer. At first she came to him herself, after - her brother Jules brought her, practically helpless, in his arms. Jules and Maria talked about painting as if nothing was happening, both were doomed, but sought solace in art. Maria Bashkirtseva left first on October 31, 1884.
The name of Maria Bashkirtseva is the only Russian name included in the list of "Immortality", placed on the sculpture of the same name in the Luxembourg Museum (Paris).
Maria Vorobyova-Stebelskaya (Marevna) - another Russian artist, whose name was forgotten at home, but which became one of the most prominent figures of the Paris school of painting and the Montparnasse bohemia.
