Only 100 years ago, cinema was still ahead. Young art was just beginning its grandiose march. The popularity that the very first movie stars had cannot even be compared with the popularity of modern actors. There were not so many of them, they were the first sex symbols of a new era, sometimes they were simply idolized. The first film stars of our country, even a century later, cause real admiration.

When talking about the legends of Russian silent cinema, they always start with Vera Kholodnaya. It was this non-professional actress who managed to captivate our viewer so much that she became the star of the first magnitude in the Russian Empire. Alexander Vertinsky always claimed that it was he who brought the future star to the cinema. This happened in 1914. However, at the first meeting, director Vladimir Gardin described her as follows:

Literally a year later, the first film with a young actress in the title role made a sensation. A few more years - and the films "By the Fireplace" with the sequel broke the records of pre-revolutionary cinema in terms of the number of viewers. Her name on the poster has become the key to the success of any new motion picture. It is surprising that she managed to achieve such incredible popularity in just less than five years of her career. The actress managed to star in several dozen tapes. The sudden death of Vera Kholodnaya in 1919 from the Spanish flu was a real tragedy. The country shuddered in revolutionary upheavals, and viewers stormed cinemas to see the latest film with the participation of their favorite. The painting "The Funeral of Vera Kholodnaya" became the last and one of the most popular in her incredibly bright and short career.

Sophia Goslavskaya

This brightest star of silent cinema, on the contrary, was destined for a very long and fruitful creative destiny. True, in the cinema, the actress eventually became disillusioned, choosing for herself a theatrical career. Then she taught performing arts for many years and wrote several autobiographical books.

Vera Karalli

This amazing woman combined a wide variety of talents. One of the leading Russian ballerinas, she toured abroad with Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Ballet, played in the theater, and then became one of the first silent film stars. One of the most mysterious pages of Russian history is associated with it. It is known that on the night of the murder of Rasputin, there were two women in the palace of Felix Yusupov. Their role in this matter is not entirely clear, but one of these mysterious ladies was undoubtedly Karalli (at that time she was associated with the Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich in a romantic relationship).

After the revolution, the artist emigrated and spent most of her life abroad - in Lithuania, France, Austria. It is known that at the very end of her life Vera Alekseevna filed a petition with a request to return to her homeland and even received a Soviet passport, but did not have time to return - literally a few weeks later the legend of the Russian scene died.

Vera Malinovskaya

This amazingly beautiful actress made her film debut in 1924. Her career was short-lived - in four years she managed to star in 11 films, becoming the star of cinema of the first magnitude during the NEP. She even managed to work with Mary Pickford when she came to shoot in our country. It is possible that it was communication with the Hollywood film star that gave birth to the idea of escape from the USSR in her, in any case, Mary spoke about this in one of her interviews:

In 1928, Vera Malinovskaya became a "defendant", staying in Germany after filming a historical film. True, she never got to America. Her career abroad ended quickly enough. In 1979, the elderly Malinovskaya visited the USSR as a guest at the XI Moscow International Film Festival.

Anna Stan

But this "non-returner" managed to achieve success in Europe and America. Born Anna Fesak, according to some sources, in her youth she even managed to work as a waitress and began her career in an amateur theater, where Stanislavsky himself drew attention to her. Under his patronage, the girl was taken to the Moscow Film Academy, and after graduation, Anna made her debut in silent films. A year later, she began to star in the main roles and became the star of the national cinema. She also gained fame abroad - several of her paintings were shown in Germany and were a huge success. Anna left the USSR to shoot in a new sound film and did not return to her homeland. In 1932, she already became a Hollywood star and starred quite a lot, she was especially willingly taken on roles in the film adaptations of Russian classics - "The Brothers Karamazov" (France), "Resurrection" (USA). It is interesting that the most famous actors and producers of their time named Anna Stan among the most beautiful and stylish actresses.
