Prokudin-Gorsky left Russia in 1918, first to Norway and England, and then finally to France. By that time, the tsar and his family had been shot, and the empire that Prokudin-Gorsky so carefully captured was destroyed. His unique depictions of Russia on the eve of the revolution - made on glass negatives - were purchased from his heirs by the Library of Congress in 1948. For this exhibition, glass plates were scanned and a new digital chromatography process resulted in bright color images.
