As you know, the crazy 20th century burst into people's lives, violating the centuries-old foundations. The change in public consciousness entailed a rethinking of values, which was reflected in everything: politics, household style, clothing. However, not everyone was happy to accept these dramatic changes and tried to resist new trends. So the first attempts of women to replace dress-covers with bathing suits were perceived by the guardians of order with hostility. Particularly zealous police officers even arrested those whose swimsuit length was above the knee.
Even 100 years ago, women's bathing suits looked like ordinary woolen dresses with pantaloons, in which it was absolutely impossible to swim. But public bathing became more and more popular and ladies tried to replace uncomfortable baggy suits with one-piece swimsuits. Not everyone agreed with such a radical change.
In 1919, wearing a one-piece swimsuit was prohibited by law in some states of the United States. An organization called the Sheriffettes was formed, with 20 employees who oversaw the "decency" of New York's beaches. There are even reports of arrests of women wearing tight-fitting swimwear.
In 1921, in the American city of Atlantic City, a lady was arrested on the beach for refusing to pull her stockings above her knees. At the same time, a law came into force in Hawaii, according to which everyone over the age of 14 was required to wear swimwear with a length of no higher than the knee. Especially savvy girls began to wrap their waist with a towel or raincoats.
It wasn't until the early 1930s that the morality police loosened their grip, and swimwear began to be regarded as comfortable clothing for exercise.
The beginning of the 20th century was a real revolution for changing swimwear and shared beaches for men and women. However, 50 years before this time in the Victorian era, in order to spend a day by the water, ladies had to carry not only a bathing suit, but also … a special bathing machine.

Pre-revolutionary apartment buildings are a special topic and a special layer both in Russian architecture and in residential construction in general. Why are the ancient artifacts of the aborigines of Australia, which were created 46,000 years ago, were destroyed today?
Man is known to be the biggest enemy of nature. No natural disaster will cause as much harm as we inflict on our Earth and its inhabitants. People are especially unprincipled when it comes to money. For example, a mining company, which is in a hurry to make a quick profit, can destroy a unique historical landmark of the most ancient earthly civilization. Meanwhile, this sacred place is over 46,000 years old
Socialites, actresses and brothel dwellers: Women who were considered the standard of beauty 100 years ago
Each generation of people creates its own beauty canons. In the first half of the 20th century, thanks to the advent of accessible photography and cinema, new standards of female attractiveness began to form. Since that time, the media began to create and disseminate stereotyped ideas about what is beautiful and what is not. Therefore, old photographs of actresses, singers and courtesans are all the more valuable because they preserve the memory of that femininity and beauty that were not imposed on people from blue
Why the paintings of the most expensive artist in the world today, Natalya Goncharova, were arrested 100 years ago right at exhibitions
Considering the work of Natalya Sergeevna Goncharova, an avant-garde artist, a representative of the "Rayonists" movement, the flagship of Russian modernism, a sculptor and decorator, one involuntarily asks the question: "And would painting collectors put out such fabulous sums of money for the primitive works of the artist if she were not surrounded by public scandals and arrests of paintings right in the exhibition halls? " It seems unlikely … And the church blamed her for the extraordinary solution of church plots
How daughters were raised in peasant families 100 years ago: What a girl could do at the age of 10
In ancient times, the upbringing of boys and girls in Russia was very different. And if the first parents were brought up as earners, then the second - as future mothers and housewives. And if they said about a 12-year-old girl that she was a "naughty", and about a boy that he "can only drive money" - it was a great shame for both the child and his parents
