It so happened that people with white skin color in African countries are considered to be something akin to the superior race. And we are not talking about Europeans, but the indigenous inhabitants of the Black Continent - albinos. Such uniqueness became a real curse for them, since it is believed that various parts of the body of white people have magical powers, so they have been hunted for many years.
In East Africa, albino white skin, arms, legs, hair, and blood are believed to have magical properties. Local shamans often use them as ingredients for making potions, amulets, or rituals. Albinos offer a very good price for various body parts, so they are hunted for real.
In the Nkole district alone in Malawi, six white-skinned people have been killed since the beginning of the year. Many people walk without some limbs, because they became victims of round-ups, and if they were not killed, then their arms or legs were cut off. Oddly enough, the inhabitants of the villages where albinos live do not prevent violence against them, because they believe that they are alive white people bring them bad luck.
Albinism is not a gift, but a disease that is caused by the absence in the body of a special enzyme responsible for the formation of melanin - a pigment that "dyes" the skin. If according to statistics all over the world albinos are born with a frequency of 1: 10000, then in East Africa this figure is - 1: 1400.
Law enforcement officers pursue albino hunters, they are even allowed to shoot them on the spot when attempting to assassinate. However, these measures are not particularly effective and the hunt for white people continues.
Brazilian photographer Gustavo Lacerda is not so bloodthirsty. He sees in albinos, first of all, a kind of unique beauty. In his series of photographs "Albinos" albinos first felt "in the foreground".
