The beautiful and the unpleasant merge together in extravagant photographic works Isabelle Wenzel - for example, those that entered its new cycle Beautiful / Decay … The office workers in Wenschel's photographs freeze in unnatural, wild postures - you can't understand whether this is a mockery, or a satire.
The aesthetics of the grotesque, according to the largest studies in this field, is built on a contrasting combination of funny and frightening: depending on which component prevails, the grotesque work of art will seem funny or scary. Name Beautiful / Decay refers directly to this concept. The works of Isabella Wensel may seem primarily a mockery - either at the "originality" of other photographers, or at the position of women in modern society - but do not forget that people who freeze or writhe in unnatural poses are an image that is successfully exploited the creators of the most creepy horror movies.
Isabella Wenzel herself does not particularly extend to the account of what exactly the heroines of her photographs are "doing" at the moment when the picture is taken. The picture has to be restored on its own, using all deductive reserves. Papers or folders are usually scattered around - so, apparently, we are talking about office life, which is in sharp contrast to the catchy elements of the clothes of the same heroines: stockings, stiletto heels, dresses.
The human body serves as an inexhaustible source for all kinds of artistic experiments. Artist Gezine Merwedel draws directly on naked people, and Anders Krisar attracts attention by exploiting the ultimate physiological naturalism. Isabelle Wenzel is concerned not so much with the shape of the body as such, but with the environment that surrounds it. Her heroines look wild and unnatural - but maybe wardrobe items and folders with papers are to blame, and not themselves?
