30 years ago, the film "The Prisoner of the Castle of If" was shot, which is called a classic of Soviet cinema and one of the best adaptations of the novel by Alexander Dumas "The Count of Monte Cristo". Why Mikhail Boyarsky refused to star in the main role, which is why the director Yungvald-Khilkevich considered this role fatal for Viktor Avilov and Evgeny Dvorzhetsky - further in the review.

The film was directed by Georgy Yungvald-Khilkevich, known for his screen versions of Dumas's works ("D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers", "The Musketeers Twenty Years Later"). Like these works, "The Prisoner of the Castle of If" was rather far from the original literary work. On the script, Yungvald-Khilkevich worked with Mark Zakharov, and both initially saw only Mikhail Boyarsky in the lead role. But the actor refused the role - it seemed not interesting enough to him. In the end, he was still persuaded to star in this film, but in the form of Fernand Mondego.

As a result, the main role went to Viktor Avilov, a theatrical actor who began acting in films just a year before. He was surprised that he was offered such a role - the Count of Monte Cristo was played by exceptionally handsome men, and he himself did not consider himself so, although he had a magnetic influence on women. But the director convinced him that he was the best candidate: in his opinion, this role should have been played by a person with great inner strength, from whose one glance the audience would understand how much trials he had to endure and how obsessed he was with a thirst for revenge. And for Avilov, this role has become a visiting card!

The director said: "". Unfortunately, the actor played few roles in the movies - in 2004 he was diagnosed with stomach cancer of the last stage, and the doctors could not save him.

Actor Yevgeny Dvorzhetsky, who played Edmond Dantes in his youth, also passed away prematurely. At 39, he died in a car accident. Yungvald-Khilkevich said about this: "".

The role of Mercedes became the debut for actress Anna Samokhina. She also determined her further successful film career - after all, before that she lost her roles in the theater due to the fact that she went on maternity leave, and the pause in her creative life dragged on. The actress for the main female role was looked for all over the country, and no one expected that she would be found in Rostov-on-Don, where she played in the Theater of the Young Spectator, until she went on maternity leave. She was found in a theater hostel where she lived with her husband and daughter. The actress was not ready to meet, and she was taken by surprise, at the stove in the shared kitchen, in a simple dressing gown, no hair and makeup. To convince the guests that she is exactly who they are looking for, she gave them her photographs "in full dress", and the next day she was invited to the shooting.
