Who grow up children and grandchildren of children's writers - people who sow good and eternal? This question is often of interest to children. And adults - too, so we found several descendants of famous children's authors, whose fate in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries is known.
Lev Kassil: transferred the wrong talent
Remember the strange and mesmerizing cartoon of the nineties "Puss in Boots" by Harry Bardeen? There is a magic cat, declaring that he is from the USA and is ready to transfer the Russian guy Vanya Karabasov directly to the USA, as a result he falls with him to … medieval France. Animator Irina Lvovna Sobinova-Kassil worked on this cartoon. As well as over the series of modern cartoons "Chucha". She is the daughter of that very Lev Kassil from her second marriage.
In general, Lev Kassil himself had an artistic talent, but in practice he did not develop it properly, focusing on literature. Is it surprising that Irina Lvovna's older brother Dmitry also became an artist? Alas, he died in the mid-nineties, having lived a not so long life.
Roald Dahl: a dynasty of little-known actresses
Dahl is an American writer of Scandinavian descent who is best known for his book on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But he also has another famous work - the script for the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. In general, Dahl's life was in some way connected with the world of cinema: the famous actress Patricia Neal became his wife. They lived together for thirty years. Nothing tragic happened - they just got divorced. Is it surprising that the offspring of Dahl and Neil simultaneously tried to realize themselves both in literature and in cinema? Their granddaughter Sophie Dahl (born 1977) starred in several films, released her graphic novel, and also worked as a fashion model for some time. Her most striking work is considered the film "The King of Bollywood", where she plays a girl named Crystal, but in general you cannot call her a movie star.
Sophie's mother, Tessa Dahl, starred in four films and wrote four books (and two graphic novels, that is, a comic book with a full-fledged long storyline). Sophie's brother Ned, a journalist, came to the attention of the press, betrothed to a real princess - a representative of the Jordanian ruling dynasty named Raya, sister of King Abdul II.
And Tessa's niece Fobe Dahl became a fashion designer and made a splash, first engaging the Australian actress Ruby Rose, and then quickly breaking the engagement. Anyone can buy clothes made by Foub Dahl. By the way, the proceeds from sales go to the purchase of school uniforms and stationery for children from low-income families. Fobe's mother also dabbled in films - as a screenwriter.
Frances Burnett: a granddaughter in the shadow of a grandmother
In Russia, Burnett is usually remembered for three books - "Little Lord Fauntleroy", "The Secret Garden" and "Little Princess" (she was even filmed here). I must say, "Little Lord" made so much noise at one time that US parents were seized with a mania to dress their sons as the hero of the book - in velvet suits of a certain cut. They literally have all of America's middle class. Velvet short pants have replaced traditional children's dresses for boys of three to eight years old. The writer herself dressed her sons in the same way, when it was still completely out of fashion - she was a lady of a romantic warehouse.
Alas, the eldest son of the writer did not give birth. He died at sixteen. The youngest, named Vivian (the writer wanted a girl at first), became a scientist and wrote a book about his mother, which was expectedly called "Romantic Lady." Grandchildren and great-grandchildren recall that his eldest daughter, Verity Burnett, also had a serious literary talent, but she was always embarrassed that she would be perceived as an imitator of her grandmother, and abandoned her literary career. But her multi-page letters with stories about life read like pages of one large and interesting book.
Victor Dragunsky: everyone writes
Few people know that the Soviet writer was born in New York, and his parents arrived there from Gomel during a large wave of Jewish emigration from the Russian Empire. Before the First World War, the family returned to their homeland - they could not settle down in a new place. Soon, Victor's father died of typhus, and the red commissar became his stepfather. For two years - died on the Civil. The next stepfather was an actor. In general, Dragoonsky's childhood was colorful and full of events. And, by the way, many of its details were included in Deniskin's Stories - although the reader may get the impression that everything described is taken from the life of Viktor Yuzefovich's son Denis.
Denis himself also became a writer, and also a journalist and popular blogger. His older brother Leonid Kornilov (maternal surname) also became a writer and journalist. Their younger sister Ksenia is the author of books for teenagers, such as "Kissing is prohibited!" and Honest Stories. Deniska's daughter, Irina, also realized herself in journalism and literature. She is the author of the controversial book The Screwing Code. Office slavery in Russia”.
Charles Dickens: the cult of Charles
One of the first children's writers loved small children, but did not like big ones, so, with the predominant participation of his wife, he constantly made new babies when the elders began to grow out of a charming age. He himself did not deal with children much, but his wife turned out to be a brilliant teacher. Virtually all of Dickens' children and grandchildren made good careers in a wide variety of fields - including, which was rare in the nineteenth century, girls. They also had many children, so Dickens' offspring are quite numerous.
His most famous descendant was actor Harry Charles Lloyd (Viserys from Game of Thrones and Otchard Mason from 2011 Jen Air). He played at least twice in the film adaptations of the books of his famous ancestor - he voiced one character in the cartoon "David Copperfield" and appeared on the screen in the TV series "Great Expectations." His cousin Gerald Charles Dickens became a stage actor. As expected, he is also now and then used in plays based on the books of Charles Dickens. Their talent could pass to them from their ancestor-writer: he, as you know, loved to appear on stage.
Two descendants of Dickens became famous in the twentieth century as writers: Cedric Charles Dickens and Lucinda Hawksley (yes, she does not have a middle name Charles, unlike most of the Dickens dynasty). But in Russia they were not translated, they remained national celebrities of the all-British level.
Alexey Tolstoy: scandalous family
The offspring of the author of the tale about Buratino, far from everything followed in his footsteps. His granddaughter Tatyana Tolstaya became a writer. His great-grandson, son Tatyana Artemy Lebedev is one of the most famous designers in Russia. Both of them are popular bloggers, they have a huge number of followers on social networks. Moreover, both of them are known for such harsh statements that scandals break out around their records. In addition, Tatiana Tolstaya is known as the co-host of the TV project "School of Scandal".
Tatiana Nikitichna's sister is also a writer and wrote her first stories in Swedish. She also wrote one of the few Swedish textbooks in our country. Natalia Nikitichnaya's son Nikolai became an academic musician.
Not only offspring is interesting in the authors of books for toddlers. Sometimes it turns out that children's writers are completely unkind. We have collected the strangeness of famous writers, after which you look at children's books differently.
