Pipilotti Rist is rightfully considered one of the classics of world video art. Her works, filled with color and energetic images, touch upon the themes of gender differences, sexuality and the human body. And, unlike the work of many other conceptual artists, Pipilotti Rist's vibrant and musical works clearly convey a sense of happiness and simplicity.
The author's real name is Elizabeth Charlotte Rist. The nickname Pipilotti is formed by combining the name of the artist's favorite literary character - Pippi Longstocking - and her childhood nickname "Lottie". Rist started making videos while at university: her first job came out in 1986 and was titled I'm Not The Girl Who Misses Much.
Pipilotti Rist videos are usually several minutes long. As a rule, images are projected onto the ceiling, floor or walls of a room, sometimes occupying them entirely. But regardless of the scale, in each work the author skillfully manipulates color, speed, sound, involving viewers in fairy worlds.
One of the most powerful works by Pipilotti Rist, according to critics, is this installation "Sip my Ocean", most of which was filmed underwater.
Pipilotti Rist was born in 1962 in Grabs (Switzerland). She graduated from the University of Applied Arts (Vienna, Austria), and also studied audiovisual communications at the School of Design (Basel, Switzerland). The author currently lives and works in Zurich and Los Angeles. Installations by Pipilotti Rist are successfully demonstrated all over the world: Spain, USA, Germany, Brazil, Finland, Japan, New Zealand and other countries.
