History knows many strong people, but few can compare with this Austrian girl who defeated the bodybuilding legend Evgeny Sandov. She easily lifted her own husband over her head, and at the first meeting she completely threw out of the ring.
Katie Brumbach was born in Austria in 1884 and raised in a circus family with 14 children. Both parents were strength athletes, and as a child, Kate learned to walk in her arms.
Kate, as well as her three sisters, joined the circus troupe of her parents. One of the most popular numbers was the fight between daughter and father, a 198-centimeter giant. The young girl was so confident in her abilities that she even made a daring offer to fight anyone. In case of victory, she pledged to pay 100 gold marks. For many years in the ring, Kate has not been defeated, but she met her husband.
Like many others, the acrobat Max Heymann thought he could handle this girl. Brumbach playfully tore him off the ground, rotated him for a while above the ground, and then sent him out of the ring. However, when their gazes met, true love broke out. Kate and Max lived together for 52 years and raised two sons.
In the early 1900s, the couple left the family circus and moved to America. There, the most powerful woman in the world was expecting numerous performances. She lifted heavy weights, tore steel chains, and bent thick rods. The power numbers looked even more spectacular, in which Kate lifted and held up to six adult men on her, when she lay down under the platform on which people walked and even a harnessed carriage passed.
Kate Brumbach admired her strength, but at the same time did not let her forget that she was a woman. She was pressing the barbell, but her nails were painted. Unlike other women athletes, journalists described her figure as nothing more than an hourglass-like figure.
In 1902, the strongest woman in the world met the strongest man, Yevgeny Sandov. The two champions met face to face in a weight lifting competition. The weight increased more and more, but none of them lagged behind. Finally, Kate Brumbach squeezed 136 kilograms over her head with one hand. Sandow was able to lift the same shell only to the chest.
After this victory, Keith Brumbach took on the pseudonym Sandwina. True, it was not clear whether this was a tribute to the famous athlete or just a mockery of him.
In the United States, Sandwina performed with her husband in several bands. In 1911 she signed a contract with the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus. At a special press conference, 10 doctors from all over the country took measurements from her: “with a height of 176 centimeters, she weighed 95 kilograms, her chest girth 112 cm, waist 74 cm, hips 109 cm, calves 41 cm, right biceps 36 cm". Doctors have come to the conclusion that in all respects, Keith Brumbach is an ideal woman.
The athlete continued to compete with Barnum and Bailey for decades and retired at the age of 60. Together with her husband, they opened a cafe in New York. And even in this field, Sandwina came in handy for her strength. One afternoon a thief burst into the room and a scuffle began. Kate put the hulk to the floor with one blow, and then taught him a good lesson.
Phineas Barnum's circus had a huge impact on the entertainment industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the strongmen, one could see there the tallest married couple in the world, "Real" mermaidas well as many more unusual people, artifacts and hoaxes.
