Georgy Danelia is one of the leaders of Russian cinema, who can rightfully be called a “legendary director”. He directed the comedies beloved by millions of "Mimino" and "Kin-dza-dza", wrote scripts for the famous "Gentlemen of Fortune", played small roles in his films, and many directors and actors gratefully call him a teacher.
Georgy Danelia was born on August 25, 1920 in Tiflis, and a year later his family moved to Moscow. In 1955, Danelia graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute and even worked for 2 years as an architect at the Design Institute. Already at that time he was interested in cinema and even acted in extras several times. In his autobiographical book "The Toasted One Drinks to the Bottom," Danelia himself told about the beginning of his career in the cinema that his father wanted to send him to VGIK right after school, and when his mother asked "why in VGIK?" retorted: "What else to do with him, fool?"
How the path to the profession began
In 1959, Georgy Danelia became a student of the Higher Directing Courses at Mosfilm. He studied for 4 years in the studio of the film director Mikhail Kalatozov, famous for the films "The Cranes Are Flying", "First Echelon", "I am Cuba". His first feature film was Seryozha, starring Sergei Bondarchuk and Irina Skobtseva, which was released in 1960. It was a screen version of Vera Panova's story "Several Stories from the Life of a Very Little Boy", which was recognized as the best film of 1961. The phrase from this film "Uncle Petya, you are a fool" - became a catch phrase, and the film itself - an attempt to look at the upbringing of children in a new way.
Tickets for this film were sold like hotcakes, the director's father commented on the film with a mean "So yourself", and Danelia himself believed that his success was an accident. And yet an inner voice whispered to him, "Shoot as you can, and do not wait for the results." And he filmed.
Director's path: successes and achievements
After his film "I walk around Moscow" young actors Mikhalkov, Loktev, Polskikh, Steblov woke up real stars, and critics wrote an angle that reveals the essence of a person or reveals it in a completely new way. That is why many actors played so beautifully in Danelia's films …"
Over the years, his films starred Kuravlev, Leonov, Kikabidze, Basilashvili, Gundareva, Volchek, Talyzina, Yakovlev, Lyubshin. He worked in collaboration with other directors, so the film "Gentlemen of Fortune", "Frenchman", "Hello from Charlie Trumpeter", "Anna" appeared.
