Social networks have long and firmly entered our lives. For single people, communication on the Internet becomes the only outlet where they can find friends and communicate, and for celebrities this is another type of advertising, a way to draw attention to their person. On September 16, 2020, many famous personalities announced a boycott of social networks. Among them are Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Campbell, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and others.
Why was the boycott of social networks announced?
In recent years, Instagram has ceased to be just a photo-sharing platform and has acquired the status of a kind of social entertainment center where you can share news, watch funny videos, ask for advice. Many celebrities who use Instagram as an advertising platform have acquired accounts on this social network.
But on Wednesday September 16, 2020, celebrities announced a 24-hour boycott of social networks Facebook and Instagram, stating that they did not want to contribute to the spread of hatred, lies and disinformation by posting about it with the hashtag #StopHateForProfit.
Earlier, nine civil rights organizations, including Color of Change and the National Association for Colored Progress, asked big business to stop posting Facebook ads to support the protest against those posts that incite hatred, support racism. and call for violence. In July of this year, more than 1,200 well-known brands, including Adidas, Ben & Jerry's, Ford, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Starbucks and Volkswagen, canceled their ads on the social network.
And from September 14, 2020, a "Week of Action" was launched, which will allow everyone to express their protest against racism, violence, hatred and electoral misinformation on Facebook and Instagram. At the same time, two global goals were set: to raise people's awareness of the harmful impact of Facebook on society and to demand that Facebook make drastic changes regarding the general policy of the social network.
Human rights groups are demanding that Facebook and Instagram leaders eliminate groups that spread "ideology of white supremacy," anti-Semitism, vaccine conspiracies, climate change denial and false election information.
It should be noted that Facebook has been criticized for several years for its inability to respond quickly to massive disinformation campaigns and data manipulation practices. Since no changes took place, it was decided to increase the pressure on the leadership of the social network.
Who is involved
One of the earliest and most high-profile announcements of joining the 24-hour social media boycott was made by Kim Kardashian, who is considered one of the most influential Instagram celebrities with an army of 189 million followers. She wrote in her message that she enjoys interacting with fans on social media, but does not consider it possible for herself to sit and be silent while “these platforms continue to allow the spread of hatred, propaganda and disinformation - created by groups to sow division and split America - only to take steps after the people are killed. "In addition, the blogger invited her subscribers to join the "Week of Action".
Jennifer Lawrence tweeted her support for the initiative, recalling Zuckerberg's statement regarding the loss of life in Kenosha. Facebook is oblivious to the hate and misinformation on its website. This is not an operational mistake, but a conscious decision to put profit above the people and democracy,”she said on her page.
Actor Mark Ruffalo also posted a call to support the boycott and explained his position: Facebook is making billions of dollars in advertising by allowing hate to flourish on its platform. It's time to hold them accountable for their inaction. Today I freeze my Instagram account for 24 hours."
Other celebrities have posted similar messages on their pages: Katy Perry, Michael B. Jordan, Demi Lovato, Ashton Kutcher, Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Campbell. Worth noting: A celebrity protest led to a 1.7% drop in Facebook's secondary market share ahead of the stock exchange's opening on the morning of September 16, 2020.
Saratov-based photographer Ellen Sheidlin has created a whole bizarre fantasy world that is reflected in her Instagram feed. Elena's shots are not like the perfect photos that we are all used to seeing. She has a completely different approach to photography, fashion, makeup and art in general.
