Armen Dzhigarkhanyan was born in 1935 in Yerevan into a family of people from an ancient Tiflis Armenian family. His surname comes from two Turkic words: "jigar" - soul and "khan" - ruler, that is, "ruler of souls". But he himself interprets his surname differently: "sincere person." He did not know his father - he left his family when his son was only a month old. Armen was raised by his mother and stepfather. Later, the actor said that he inherited from his mother fortitude, a sense of humor, which saved him in the most difficult situations, and love for the theater. Since childhood, he went with her to performances and was determined to become an actor. After school, he tried to enter GITIS, but was not accepted due to a strong accent.

This first failure did not stop him. Returning to Yerevan, Dzhigarkhanyan got a job as an assistant cameraman at a film studio, and a year later he entered the Yerevan Theater Institute. Even in his first year, he began performing on the stage of the Yerevan Russian Drama Theater, to which he gave 12 years of his life. In the late 1960s. the famous director Anatoly Efros invited him to the troupe of the Lenkom Theater in Moscow, after 2 years the actor moved to the Mayakovsky Theater, where he worked until the mid-1990s.

His colleagues treated his creative success differently. Someone admired his performance, someone made fun of her, and many even accused him of illegibility - they say, agrees to play everything, indiscriminately. But the directors unanimously praised the actor for the breadth of his acting range - it seemed that he was subject to any role. The epigram of Valentin Gaft became winged: "". Mark Zakharov joked: "Ch" The actor himself reacts to such jokes also with humor: "" And he adds that it would be appropriate to answer the questions about the number of roles played with the words of the great chess player Tigran Petrosyan: "".
