They were incredibly popular, Alla Ioshpe and Stakhan Rakhimov. They were welcome guests at concerts of the highest level, their names were put on a par with the names of Muslim Magomayev, Joseph Kobzon, Maya Kristalinskaya and Edita Piekha. And then, in an instant, all their concerts were banned and for a whole decade they were actually put under house arrest. And they demanded to abandon each other, and their daughters offered to abandon their parents. But they survived, survived, lived together for 60 years and passed away with a difference of 40 days.
Grand Prize
Alla Ioshpe and Stakhan Rakhimov were favorites at the student amateur competition, and both became winners. But they took their main prize a little later, when they realized: they are so different, but they absolutely cannot live without each other.
She was born in Moscow to a Jewish family, he grew up in Tashkent and was raised by one mother. By the time they met, everyone had their own family, and they lived quite happily. Just after the end of the competition, Stakhan Rakhimov went to see Alla Ioshpe home. No one at that moment even thought about any feelings … Although Stakhan prudently took off his wedding ring and put it in his pocket.
Alla Ioshpe was very lame since childhood. After suffering blood poisoning and numerous operations, she managed to save her leg, but pain tormented her throughout her life. And on stage, she often sang while sitting.
When Alla Ioshpe and Stakhan Rakhimov realized that they could not live without each other, they left their families. Both understood the pain they inflicted on their loved ones, but the feelings were stronger. Relatives of the lovers were against this marriage. Alla was persuaded that the Uzbek would not be faithful to her. Stakhan was offered to change his mind and not marry a spoiled Muscovite, whom he would have to take care of all his life because of problems with his leg. But they couldn't imagine living apart.
Alla Ioshpe's first husband, Robert Chumak, persuaded his wife not to burn the bridges, promised not to remember her hobby for the Uzbek singer and was going to wait until they parted, saying that they were not a couple. But Alla Ioshpe decided to be close to the one she loves.
Music in Denial
Alla Ioshpe and Stakhan Rakhimov celebrated the wedding in the circle of the closest ones, and soon the bright stage duet created by the spouses became one of the most popular in the country. They shone not only in the Soviet Union, but successfully toured abroad. The audience was impressed by the soft lyrical manner, and hundreds and thousands of spectators sang the songs "Alyosha", "Nightingales", "Goodbye, boys", "Meadow night" together with Alla Ioshpe and Stakhan Rakhimov at their concerts.
But in the late 1970s, a scandal erupted. Alla Ioshpe's health was deteriorating, an operation was required abroad. They applied for an operation abroad and were refused. Then the couple decided to emigrate to Israel for permanent residence, but the authorities responded by imposing a ban not only on their departure abroad, but also on work in the country.
This was followed by deprivation of titles and awards, destruction of records and refusal of concert activity. Alla Ioshpe's daughter Tatyana was expelled from the institute, and the whole family was summoned in turn to the Lubyanka, offering the spouses to abandon each other, and the daughter's parents. Their lives turned into a real nightmare: calls and letters with threats, doors on fire, a wrecked car …
For the press, they seemed to have died, only sometimes lecturers of the Knowledge Society, during their speeches at enterprises, said that Ioshpe and Rakhimov emigrated to Israel, live in need and complete oblivion, ask to return to the Soviet Union, but “the country does not need traitors.
Their "house arrest" lasted for ten years. During this time, all savings were gone, a car, furniture and all more or less valuable things were sold. One day the couple wrote a hundred letters and sent them to various publications. They wrote that they did not leave, but their work is banned. Then strangers started calling them from pay phones. They spoke words of encouragement. And acquaintances began to come to visit with gifts and, of course, asked to sing …
Since then, every Saturday, the doors of the house of Alla Ioshpe and Stakhan Rakhimov were thrown open so that again everyone could hear the enchanting voices of the spouses. Actors, academics, musicians came to them. The Saturday performances of the home theater were later called "Music in Refusal", the emblem of which was a painting by one of the forbidden artists depicting two birds with beaks locked in a barn lock.
… for love is strong as death …
A long ten years passed until the time when the spouses were still allowed to return to the stage. At first, they performed exclusively in small, remote towns. Only thanks to the participation of Joseph Kobzon, the spouses were still given the opportunity to again enter the big stage. They again gathered full houses and sounded in unison with their voices.
They lived together for 60 long years and were invariably happy, despite all the trials they had to go through. Even in oblivion, they were with each other and sang for each other. For their love helped, warmed and did not let them fall or lose hope.
Together they could do anything. Separately, they could not even breathe. Once Stakhan Rakhimov said: “We cannot but sing together. We cannot help but live together. This is out of the question. These words turned out to be prophetic. Alla Ioshpe passed away on January 30, 2021. And exactly 40 days later, Stakhan Rakhimov was gone. They just couldn't live without each other.
Variety artists, who in the 1960s delighted Soviet listeners with their lyrical songs, after some time suddenly began to disappear from television and radio screens one by one. Then many talented performers were included in the so-called "black" list of Sergei Lapin, an official who in the early 1970s took the chair of the Chairman of the USSR State Committee on Television and Radio. The establishment of a rather strict censorship is associated with his name. Each of the artists experienced oblivion after fame in their own way, and therefore their fates developed differently.
