It's October, which means it's time to remember such a wonderful vegetable as pumpkin. First, you can make delicious porridge or the famous pumpkin pie out of it. And secondly, Halloween is coming soon - a holiday, the symbol of which is again a pumpkin. And while there is time, you can learn the art of creating pumpkin sculptures from the American Scott Cummins.
Scott's sculptures are no doubt reminiscent of Halloween pumpkins. However, they are made much more skillfully, and the master's plots are not limited to ominous faces, but much more diverse: here are cartoon characters, and even the Statue of Liberty. Although the author still uses lighting for his works: at first it was candles, then lanterns, and now inside the mysterious glow of the figures is provided by 30-watt bulbs.
It takes Scott about one hour to create one sculpture, in some cases up to two hours. He uses a wide variety of tools for work: spoons, shovels, hatchets, pieces of wire, files and, of course, all kinds of knives. But the time for the master's creativity is limited: he can work only a couple of months a year, when the pumpkins ripen.
Scott Cummins is a schoolteacher. He mastered the art of carving pumpkin sculptures on his own, naming practice, practice and only practice as the main teacher. The author does not pursue any commercial purpose in the production of his works, creating them exclusively for his own pleasure. You can see all his work on the website.
Scott gets the idea for a sculpture when he looks at the pumpkin and its shape. He does not use any templates, although sometimes he is helped by photographs of cut objects. But what the master categorically refuses to do is to carve sculptures to order. It would seem a strange decision, because such work is paid well. But Scott is guided by completely different motives: if he makes sculptures the way others want, then he will not have time to implement his own ideas. And the pleasure received from work is much more important for this person than money.
