When Vicki and Eddie said their child was diagnosed with Down syndrome, there was no end to their grief. It seemed to them that this was a sentence, that it meant that they would never be able to communicate normally with their daughter and that she would never be able to adapt to life. However, instead, portraits of little Lily can be seen on advertisements for the largest clothing store in Britain - and this event is celebrated by parents as much as their daughter.
When Vicki Beddall was still pregnant, she underwent a routine test for the possibility of a baby developing Down syndrome and was told that the risk was minimal. That is why when the parents were told about this diagnosis in their newborn daughter, Vicki and her husband Eddie were shocked. "The whole world has faded, it seemed to us that life has changed and will never be what we dreamed of. And it really has changed - but for the better! Our daughter brought light into our lives!" - says Vicki.
"With an ordinary child, you sometimes do not have time to keep track of changes - everything happens so quickly. But with Lily, we celebrate every step in development: every smile or step is of great importance to us. And I love her with all my heart," adds Eddie.
Now Lily can say 15 words, and explain 60 more with gestures. Of course, Lily's parents had to accept that some of the expectations from their daughter would never come true, but in some aspects she is the same child as everyone else. "Every day she surprises me, every day we laugh together." Last fall, the couple received a call from a modeling agency. Local clothing brand Matalan reached out to the Bedal family through the charity "Upwards with Downs." They chose Lily to be the face of their Spring / Summer 2017 kids collection, and the baby's portrait can now be seen in all 217 stores of the brand!
Of course, Lily's parents are very happy that Lily had the opportunity to prove to other people that prejudices in society about people with Down syndrome are often wrong. “Down syndrome is often not what people expect. Yes, sometimes it’s hard, but the whole life is not easy, and Lily is still only two years old,” says Vicki. "She has many friends and plays with them just like the rest. It is important to break stereotypes and show that beauty can take any shape, size and potential."
