When you are a queen, you cannot say to the face of your interlocutor: "." To look dignified under any circumstances, a special secret code has been developed for the queen, which makes it clear to the servants that the queen needs to be saved from continuing an unpleasant conversation.
The existence of the secret code, as well as what it is, was told by Hugo Vickers, a historian of the British royal family. According to his data, to give a signal, the queen uses items that are always with her - for example, her purse. If Elizabeth II shifts her purse from one hand to another during a conversation, this means that the queen wants to end this communication - and literally within a few minutes someone from the servant will come up to her and, under a plausible pretext, will take her away from her interlocutor. This way the queen will not have to apologize or explain why she does not want or cannot continue the conversation.
Usually, people who are going to meet the queen are instructed in advance, explaining all the rules of etiquette. However, if for some reason the queen does not want to talk to someone, she just needs to shift the bags from hand to hand, and someone from the servant will suddenly come up to the interlocutor and very politely say something like "Sir, with you Archbishop of Ketnerbury wishes to speak. " And before the person has time to give an answer, the queen will politely bow her head and respectfully step aside, making it clear that the conversation is over. So everything remains within the bounds of decency.
The additional functions of the queen's handbag are not limited to this. So, if Elizabeth II put her accessory on the table, with this gesture she lets you know that she is going to leave the event in the near future (usually in five minutes). However, this is not as serious as if the queen began to fiddle with her wedding ring on her finger. While most people do this when they are thinking about something, Elizabeth II makes it clear with such a gesture that she urgently needs to be saved not only from the interlocutor, but maybe even taken away from this place.
When the Queen receives guests at Buckingham Palace, she also signals to the servants on the other side of the door. Thus, when the guest is about to leave, the doors in front of him "miraculously" swing open and the servant is already waiting to be escorted. It is believed that the queen has a miniature secret device that sends this signal within the palace.
Interestingly, the handbags for the queen are made by Launer. These handbags can be purchased and "mere mortals", which, however, will have to pay about two thousand dollars for them.
The queen's love for Launer handbags began back in 1968, when she made the first order to Sam Launer, and, being pleased with the result, gave the order to grant his company the right to create accessories for the monarchy.
The queen's accessory must meet several criteria - the handbag must have long enough handles so as not to interfere with the handshake, but at no time should it be a shoulder bag. Also, there should be no zippers or tricky locks - the bag should be easy to open, but at the same time be reliable enough not to swing open for no reason. The handbags specially ordered for the Queen have a mirror to match the accessory, a wallet and a case for glasses. Inside the bag, it is believed that the queen puts a handkerchief, an ink pen and mints.
The tradition of following etiquette has existed for several centuries, and its roots go back to the ancient Middle Ages - however, then it looked rather unusual for a modern person. Read about it in our article. "Etiquette of the past: how they behaved at the table in the Middle Ages".
