In 1996, the song "Oh, what a woman" became one of the most popular and beloved in the entire post-Soviet space. Together with the soloist of the Freestyle group, Sergei Dubrovin, the whole country sang it, and the performer himself literally bathed in the rays of glory. But after just five years, he suddenly disappeared from the scene. How was the fate of the talented singer, what is he doing now and why does he think that the song, which became a hit, ruined his life?

The path to glory

He was born in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchug in 1972 and very early was left without a father, he died of a stroke when Sergei was only six years old. Mom worked hard and hard to somehow provide for her two sons, Sergei and his older brother Alexander. Moreover, both were passionately engaged in music. Sergei was a soloist in the school choir and vocal and instrumental ensemble.

Sergei Dubina (real name of the performer), after graduating from the eight-year school, entered the choral department of the music school. On the same course with him, only at the dance department, the girl Marina studied, with whom the future star performer fell in love almost at first sight and, as it seemed to him then, for the rest of his life.

After waiting for the age of majority, the lovers went to the registry office. After graduating from college, Sergei, along with his young wife, left Alexandria, where he studied, in his native Kremenchug, where he worked in the local House of Officers as the head of the VIA. He often traveled with concerts to nearby military units, while Marina taught choreography at a dance school at that time.

Luck smiled at Sergei Dubin in 1992 thanks to the departure from the popular Freestyle group of soloist Vadim Kazachenko. The founder and head of the team announced a competition in which, among hundreds of applicants, Sergei took part. He simply could not miss this chance, especially since the group's base was in Poltava. And already a day after the audition, the head Anatoly Rozanov informed Sergey about the enrollment in the group. At the same time, the founder's wife and permanent soloist of "Freestyle" Nina Kirso advised Sergei to take a stage name. And the whole country recognized the artist under the name Sergey Dubrovin.

In the same 1992, Sergei had a daughter, Anya, but only from the moment Sergei moved to the Freestyle group, his family life began to collapse before our eyes. When Sergei sang the hit "Oh, what a woman", popularity fell on him, and there were always fans next to him. They accompanied the group on tour, waited for Sergei after rehearsals. Marina, who was waiting for her husband at home in Kremenchug, was desperately jealous of her husband both for success and for the women who were next to him. But Sergei himself assures that he never cheated on his wife.

The scandals at home simply did not stop, the spouses stopped sleeping in the same bed and, most importantly, as if they had stopped hearing and understanding each other. At some point, Sergei, tired of wandering from his own house to his mother's house, invited his wife to leave. According to the performer, it was the song "Oh, what a woman" that became the starting point, after which the family began to collapse. Fortunately, after the divorce, he did not stop communicating with his daughter, taking an interest in her affairs. This allowed him to maintain a good relationship with Anna. The girl has long grown up and graduated from the Kiev Aviation Institute. She knows that she can always turn to her father for help and support.

Sudden departure

After the divorce, Sergei Dubrovin sang in the Freestyle group for several more years and toured all over the world. But at some point he decided to leave the band, which actually gave the performer a "start in life." The performer believed that he was being squeezed and could not come to terms with the fact that Nina Kirso appears on the stage more often, and not himself.

It seemed to the performer that he was deliberately deprived of the opportunity to sing, and therefore he decided to announce his departure. True, Anatoly Rozanov has his own version of events. He claims that Sergei Dubrovin simply did not come to work on the day the group was supposed to go to Odessa for a concert. However, it is rather difficult to understand today who is right and who is wrong.

Sergei Dubrovin, after leaving Freestyle, was never able to start a solo career. As he himself says, they categorically did not want to deal with him. The singer believes that Anatoly Rozanov had a hand in this boycott, although the latter claims: he had nothing to do with the lack of demand for the former soloist.

The performer, who was unsuccessfully trying to build a solo career, at some point decided to leave the country. And he chose Germany for the move, where, thanks to frequent performances abroad, he already had acquaintances and friends.

New love

In a new place, the performer began life from scratch. He graduated from a language college, then entered the Faculty of Economics at the University of Freiburg. And, despite the rather strenuous studies, he continued to study music, gave concerts for former compatriots. After one of them, Irina Walter, a longtime admirer of his work, approached him for an autograph. True, on that day, the acquaintance somehow did not work out, but fate two years later gave them another chance.

Then Sergey and Irina met again, this time in an informal setting and in the same company. The girl showed the performer his own autograph, they got into conversation and, unexpectedly for themselves, felt mutual sympathy, which grew into deeper feelings.

Irina helped the performer regain faith in himself, gave Sergei the opportunity to feel needed, loved and happy. They have been together for 17 years, 16-year-old son Lionel and 13-year-old daughter Livia are growing up in the family. They lived in Germany until 2017, after which they decided to move to Russia.

Today Sergey Dubrovin is touring the country again, performing songs to the words and music of his beloved wife. And of course, the hit "Oh, what a woman" sings at every concert.

It is not clear what is more terrible for an artist - not to become famous at all, or to flare up with one role or a hit and fade away. The higher the popularity of a hit, the more likely it is that this level of success will never be achieved. A huge number of hits of the past are not just not forgotten, but returned in time for many years ago. What happened to the performers of the cult songs of the era?
