The daughter of a jeweler and designer Elora Hardy grew up in Bali and then left to study and live in America. But ten years ago, she again visited this paradise island and returned to New York greatly impressed. She was overwhelmed by amazing ideas related to bamboo: Elora decided to build houses from it, and not simple ones, but incredible beauty and practicality. She immediately quit her job as a fashion designer in New York, moved to Bali and started her own construction business. Elora now builds residential art objects from bamboo stalks, surprising the whole world.
From New York to the jungle
In Bali, bamboo was used for construction before (for example, Elora's father erected buildings from it for his company), but the girl made a real revolution in the use of this material. She proved that it is the building material of the future. Her houses are modern, large-scale, relevant and beautiful. And most importantly, they are comfortable.
“Bamboo is an ideal building material,” says Elora. - It's as strong as concrete, yet lightweight. By the way, it can even withstand an earthquake. Also, do not forget that it is a natural renewable resource - bamboo grows very quickly and therefore will never end. It is also eco-friendly and beautiful."
The girl considers the only drawback of this material to be the possibility of damage from moisture and insects, but here she also found a way out - Elora impregnates the stems with boron. As you know, boron compounds have long been used by builders when processing logs and timber, since it protects wood well from fire, pests and moisture.
Elora uses the help of architecture students to bring her projects to life. “The peculiarity of our work is that we do not work with drawings made in advance on a computer,” she explains, but we use physical models. After all, no standard computer program used by architects can calculate the natural curves of bamboo stalks. So every young architect who comes to work for me must first go through the process of "weaning" from the knowledge that he received at the university. So we had to invent our own rules!"
Elora Hardy's magical, completely stunning homes are an example of complete unity with nature. According to the local tradition associated with the peculiarities of the climate, they almost do not have solid walls (the architect makes only bedrooms and bathrooms closed), and outwardly many buildings of this talented girl are somewhat similar to mysterious lotus flowers.
Private House Sharma Springs
This is the lotus-like one that Elor built the six-story Sharma Springs home for a Canadian large family. It has six floors and is the tallest bamboo building in Bali. The horizontal sections of the villa are supported by bamboo piles.
You can get to the first floor of the house through a 15-meter tunnel, also made of intricately woven bamboo.
Bamboo bridge
Such an unusual object with a length of 26 meters is considered the largest bamboo bridge in Asia. Elora is confident that this building material is suitable not only for creating homes, but also for the construction of such durable structures as bridges, which once again proves the versatility of bamboo.
House-list
The architect built this three-bedroom private house in Sibang Gede in the form of a leaf facing east, for which the building was named "House of the Rising Sun".
The villa is very cozy and modern, and most importantly - a lot of fresh air and light.
Elora Hardy's company has now built dozens of bamboo houses for both private ownership and rental. And if earlier a bamboo hut in Bali was associated with a shack of the poor, now it is already a symbol of luxury, originality and environmental friendliness, which only a modern successful person of progressive views can appreciate. Bamboo houses are very popular among Europeans and Americans tired of megacities.
By the way, at the request of the customer, the girl can also make furniture for a bamboo house - also very beautiful, original and durable.
A look at architecture through the prism of ecology can be very shocking, but effective. This proves, for example, Arc de Triomphe built from the waste of civilization in Austria.
