On September 28, 2019, the greatest director of our time, the head of the Lenkom theater, Mark Anatolyevich Zakharov, passed away. A whole epoch has gone with him. His films are classics of Soviet cinema, and his theater is a real legend. He discovered new names and carefully collected talented, bright, unique actors in his troupe. He managed to create his own unique collection of productions, films and names.
Directors are not born
As a child, Mark Zakharov did not even think about connecting his life with theater and cinema. Despite the fact that his mother Galina Sergeevna Bardina herself was an actress in the past, and later taught children acting in drama circles, she was against her son following in her footsteps. And she told him to enter the Civil Engineering Institute. After the failure of her son at the entrance exams, Galina Sergeevna suddenly ordered him to carry the documents to the theater. Zakharov was not admitted to the Moscow Art Theater School, but after additional preparation for auditions, he became a student at GITIS.
Mark Zakharov himself dreamed of how to break out of poverty and half-starved existence. He was inspired by the novel by Jack London "Martin Eden", where the main character was able to build his own life. And he decided to go firmly towards his goal, performing the work that he undertook with high quality. But his wife Nina Lapshinova, whom Mark Anatolyevich met in his student years, once told her husband that he was a very mediocre actor. He believed her and directed all his strength towards directing.
Zakharov served as an actor in the Perm drama and at the same time taught at the student theater of the local university. Returning to Moscow, he worked at the Moscow State Theater named after Gogol, then at the Theater of Miniatures, then directed the Student Theater of Moscow State University.
When Mark Zakharov staged "The Dragon" at the Moscow State University Theater, it seemed that the whole capital, including visitors, attended this performance. Later there were new performances and each became an event in the theatrical life of the capital. Ten years after graduation, he was already a director at the Moscow Theater of Satire, and in 1973 he headed the Lenin Komsomol Theater.
Unique collection
Mark Zakharov built "his own theater" with special diligence. He wanted the Lenin Komsomol Theater to become a community of creators, and carefully selected actors for his troupe. He had a special gift for seeing talents. Thanks to Mark Zakharov, the viewer recognized Oleg Yankovsky and Alexander Abdulov, Nikolai Karachentsov and Dmitry Pevtsov.
The director was not afraid to take already famous actors to the theater: Evgeny Leonov, Leonid Bronevoy, Tatyana Peltzer, Inna Churikova. And today the troupe can be proud of its actors, including Alexander Zbruev and Andrey Sokolov, Elena Shanina and Tatyana Kravchenko, Alexander Lazarev and Gennady Khazanov, Anna Bolshova and Alexandra Zakharova.
He treated everyone's personality with love and respect, but at the same time he was demanding and strict. He always clearly knew what the performance should be, and was able to get the actors to impeccably fulfill the director's requirements.
His theater was unique in its kind. Ideological performances were staged here, which were immediately approved by the Soviet censorship, but at the same time Zakharov always brought his ironic attitude to the surrounding reality. His performances are also a unique collection of images and styles, mixing of times and the ability to be free, regardless of circumstances and surrounding reality.
Romance with cinema
He did not shoot many films, but each picture by Mark Zakharov is a real masterpiece. More than one generation of directors and screenwriters will learn from Zakharov's films, and the audience will be happy to watch their favorite films.
His films starred "his" actors, those with whom he worked in the theater. As a result, Mark Zakharov's paintings acquired a completely unique style. It was a kind of symbiosis of theater and cinema: the unforgettable "Formula of Love" and the magical "Ordinary Miracle", the incredible "The Same Munchausen" and the innovative film-parable "Kill the Dragon".
In addition, Zakharov himself wrote scripts for films, and the letters he created from Comrade Sukhov in "White Sun of the Desert" are a real work of art.
The work of Mark Zakharov has received numerous awards, the director has been awarded high titles and numerous prizes. But, probably, the highest recognition is truly nationwide love.
On September 28, 2019, Mark Anatolyevich died in the hospital from repeated pneumonia. Gone is a brilliant director and a man, but the bright memory of the Great Master of his craft and his unique works, his unique collection remain.
Mark Zakharov and Nina Lapshina lived together for 58 years. In their life, far from everything and it was not always smooth, but the wife has always remained for Mark Anatolyevich the most important person in life, work and destiny. Until she appeared, his Alexandra.
