The auction house Christie's in London held an auction on November 28, 2018, where books and manuscripts of Russian writers were put up for sale. These auctions were held within the framework of the "Russian week", which is traditionally held in the British capital twice in November-December and May-June. Most of all, during the auction, they managed to bail out for Nikolai Gogol's book "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka".
For the first edition at auction, they paid 175 thousand pounds, which is equivalent to 225 thousand US dollars. Thus, the real value of the lot turned out to be three times higher than the value that was named by the experts who were evaluating the lot before putting it up for sale. The buyer decided to pay so much for the book, which was published in St. Petersburg in 1832.
A. Plychard's printing house was responsible for its printing. None of the lots have managed to collect such an amount. In total, more than two hundred lots were put up for auction.
During this auction, other rare manuscripts were also sold, as well as books created by Russian writers. For example, for 119 thousand pounds, which is 152 thousand dollars, Osip Mandelstam's book "Stone" was sold. The value of this lot is that the book is a gift copy of the first edition. In addition, it contains a dedication to Vyacheslav Ivanov, a Russian poet.
The works of the great classic, Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin, were also sold quite expensively under the hammer. 100 thousand pounds, which translated into US dollars is 128 thousand, a separate edition of "Eugene Onegin" was sold, or rather the first chapter of this work, published in 1825. Its distinctive feature is the presence of a paper cover. The buyer paid a little less for the first edition of the poem Ruslan and Lyudmila. From the sale of this lot rescued the amount of 81 thousand pounds or 104 thousand dollars.
Experts did not appreciate the letter of Marina Tsvetaeva, which she wrote to Nikolai Tikhonov in 1935, very dearly. But they were wrong, and the revenue significantly exceeded the estimated value. This letter was sold for 61, 25 thousand pounds, which is equivalent to 78 thousand dollars.
All in all, from the sale of books and manuscripts by Russian writers, it was possible to bail out an amount of 2.23 million pounds, which in terms of dollars is 2.86 million.
