June 23, 2011 is a day off in Austria, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Poland … What do all these countries have in common, and what kind of holiday is it? Common is Catholicism, and the holiday is Day of the Body and Blood of Christ, or just Corpus Christi, Body of Christ … On this day, the Catholics of the world paid tribute to the bodily essence of Jesus, and at the same time noted birthday of John the Baptist: this year they almost coincided. Well, we have collected the most amazing and vivid photos from the world Catholic kaleidoscope of traditions. Join!
Brasilia. Night on the feast of Corpus Christi
The first photo is straight from the capital of Brazil. Thousands of people with fire in their hands gathered not to commit atrocities, like hockey fans in Vancouver, but to pray - after all, they are not holding torches, but candles. In the foreground is a long exposure procession with candles. In the back - brazil cathedral, built in the 1960s by the design of the brilliant architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Menorca. Festival in honor of John the Baptist
On the world famous Mediterranean island resort of Menorca, the Nativity of John the Baptist is celebrated with a horse race. Hot black horses galloped through the city of Ciutadella on June 23rd and 24th. Peasants, artisans and local ancient nobility - all layers of the indigenous Spanish population of the island - compete in horse riding.
Salzburg. Corpus Christi
In Austria, in the homeland of Mozart, the Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated by people with weapons. But there will be no shooting; there will be a ceremonial procession of shooters in traditional costumes of green cloth.
La Villa. Corpus Christi
In such a religious holiday, one cannot do without the enemy of the human race - for contrast. That is why, in a family rite in Castrillo de Murcia, a man in a devil costume jumps over babies. And in the city of La Villa in Panama, a demonic mask with terrible fangs is added to the devil's costume. Only communion with the Flesh of Christ can drive out demons.
Malaga. St. John's Night
June 24, beach in Malaga, in the very south of sunny Andalusia. The Nativity of John the Baptist (or, as the Spaniards call it, San Juan) is celebrated not only during the day: after sunset, the Spaniards burn old things, make wishes and jump over bonfires. The Orthodox also know a lot about this (calling John the Baptist Ivan Kupala) - although, of course, these rituals are far from Christian roots.
Naihuata. Corpus Christi
Naihuata is a Mediterranean resort on the northern coast of Venezuela. Here Corpus Christi celebrated with solemn processions, a distinctive feature of which is very bright costumes. Exuberantly colorful outfits are typical for Latin American peoples, especially for Indians (remember the celebration of the summer solstice by the people of the Aymara people).
Love for bright colors is reflected even in the very symbol of Christianity. Judging by the face of the man drinking a Cuban cigar, he is extremely far from the ideas of asceticism.
San Pedro Manrique. St. John's Night
Almost all local rituals on the night of St. John are somehow connected with fire - this is because at the time the Christian holiday is in a "dangerous" neighborhood with a hot, fiery solstice (especially in the Catholic calendar). In the Spanish city of San Pedro Manrique, on this day, they not only jump over bonfires, but also carry their wives through flaming coals. Very romantic!
Genzano di Roma. Corpus Christi
Genzano di Roma is a town 25 kilometers from Rome. Last 2 weeks before Happy Body and Blood of Christ here they are literally strewn with rose petals - and this is all called "Infiorata", "blooming". For 250 years the locals have spared flower petals, which are followed by a festive procession later … Next time we will tell you more about this holiday that made the city famous.
Mexico City. Corpus Christi
Mexico has a special "jumping" dance chinelos, whose main feature is the very brightly dressed dancers. Even brighter than Venezuela. The original costumes and masks are the result of two centuries of mockery of the "gachupins", arrogant Spanish aristocrats with their black beards and lace collars. Over time, hostility to the Spanish colonialists faded away, but the folk dance theater remained; it is practiced on the Day of the Body and Blood of Christ in the capital of Mexico.
Rome. Corpus Christi
And at the end of our review, of course, the Pope, who congratulates all good Catholics and lights a candle in memory of the earthly life of Jesus Christ.

15 most absurd and unforgivable things the Catholic Church has ever done
Surely many remember stories from the school curriculum, where it was about the very Inquisition, the burning of Joan of Arc and the trial of Galileo. As regrettable as it may sound, but most of such disgusting deeds came from the Pontiffs. Some of them were approved by the church, and some were even common church practice. And it is not at all surprising that the dark church history contains scandal after scandal, replete with all the vices and taboos one can imagine
How the great artists of the past portrayed the Nativity of Christ: Botticelli, Barrocchi, etc
As stated in the Gospels, Christ's life on earth began with an extraordinary birth and ended with a terrible death, followed by a resurrection. There are many episodes between these two poles, including miracles, dialogues and sermons containing the main teachings of Christianity. Not surprisingly, one of the world's most beloved stories - the story of the birth of Jesus - has been the subject of many artists for centuries. How famous artists portrayed the Nativity of Christ
Personality paradox: Vladimir Krasnoe Solnyshko - pagan voluptuary and great Baptist of Russia
The stone gates of ancient Chersonesos (they can still be seen in Crimea today), into which Prince Vladimir entered, divided his life into two parts. In the pagan, sacrifices, murders and a harem with hundreds of concubines remained, and in the Christian - he did alms, led a pious family life with his only legal wife, Anna, did not disdain to share a meal with the beggars. For those who could not come to the prince's court due to illness, food was delivered on carts. At some point, a merciless pagan in the past
Weight loss as a creative concept: Photo by Christi Nielsen
Judging by the number of requests in Yandex, thousands of people are concerned about the problem of losing weight. It is unlikely that many of them realize that art may be associated with this problem. Christi Nielsen in her photographs very effectively and with self-irony shows by her own example how difficult it is to lose weight. The photos are interesting in concept and are saturated with humor (the masterpiece “Death by Chocolate” alone is worth something), which means that there will be interesting to many
