From afar, they seem to be the personification of equine grace and beauty. Freedom-loving horses, they are ready to run through the woods and along the beaches, flying like the wind past enthusiastic people. But, unfortunately, all they can do is stand calmly and proudly, demonstrating all their greatness. They are statues, but for this they are no less beautiful than live horses.
The beautiful and proud wooden horses are created by a woman of sixty named Heather Jansch, who lives and works in Devon, England. She has been a sculptor for nearly forty years and has created beautiful figures of horses and other animals from driftwood found on the beach. Her work is very painstaking, requiring tremendous effort and patience. Artist Heather Jansch has been working on some of the horse statues for about three years. When creating large sculptures, the Englishwoman uses a steel frame, to which she attaches wooden parts with wires, nails and screws. Despite its fragile appearance, each horse weighs three quarters of a ton.
“A statue has to not only withstand public demonstrations, but also survive high winds, rain and storms without falling or sideways,” says Jansch, who has a huge list of orders from clients and potential buyers of her artwork.
From early childhood, Heather Jansch had two passions, two hobbies: horses and drawing. I have always considered Leonardo da Vinci to be my favorite artist. She dreamed of becoming an artist and living in a quiet house near the forest, where a clean stream runs, and there are many, many horses around, and you can sit and paint quietly and calmly. In some ways, her dream came true. Heather Jansch really got her start as an artist, but switched from drawing to sculpture in 1970. Once it seemed to her that the wooden driftwood found by her son reminded her in some way of the body of a horse. Her next question was: can she find something else similar? Even then I decided for myself what I wanted to do. Since then, Jansch has created nearly 100 wooden horses.
