Few in all the time spent at the school bench, at least once did not decorate the desk, furtively writing their own name on it or scratching out a heart pierced by an arrow. Ben Turnbull does much the same thing - only more professionally and openly. The “I Don’t Like Mondays” series are images of various types of weapons that the author carved on wooden desks as a protest against violence and war.

The contrast between the selected material and the images cut on it is immediately striking. School desk and weapons. Peaceful, carefree childhood and cruelty. Innocence and violence. There is another aspect here: children often get acquainted with the same violence and cruelty already from school, which is facilitated by computer shooting games and American action films. If the author wanted to achieve a strong effect with his works, then he did it: wooden desks from pleasant memories of the school past turned into a frightening reflection of the face of modern culture.

Carving something on a school desk is more of a child's play than an activity for a grown man. But for Ben Turnbull, who criticizes the modern American political system in his work, this is very symbolic: “Subjected to violence from the ruling superpower and constantly blackmailed by a sense of patriotism, people ultimately become as accessible as the toys with which they used to - then they played."

There are seven pieces in the “I Don’t Like Mondays” collection in total. And despite the fact that in this work the idea is in the first place, one cannot fail to note the high skill of Ben Turnbull - the images carved in the wood are impeccable.
