Jill Draper's passion for embroidered landscapes began many years ago while studying in Leicester. The author says that she really liked the embroidered dresses and vests of the Elizabethan era, as well as the paintings with volumetric embroidery. The seamstresses of those times skillfully transferred to the canvas the images of the simplest things that surrounded them in everyday life: insects, flowers, birds, people … Jill began experimenting with various techniques, but very soon she invented her own, embroidering on a sewing machine using a hoop.

First, the artist paints a background image on canvas using fabric paint, then sits down at the sewing machine and, with many small stitches, adds depth and texture to the picture. “I draw on a typewriter as if I had a brush or pencil in my hands,” says the craftswoman. Jill mainly works with cotton and terylene yarns as they are durable and come in a variety of colors and shades. Sometimes Jill embroider parts of the painting by hand with silk thread.

Jill Draper embroiders the landscapes of her native Suffolk - according to the author, there is no place dearer for her on earth, and it is this picturesque corner of Britain that serves as an inspiration for her work. She works 6 hours a day and always in daylight, allowing you to select the correct shades of thread. Jill also often dismisses the newly embroidered parts and redoes everything until she likes the result.
