Getting into the Spanish city of Setenil de las Bodegas, the biblical truth comes to mind that there is a time to throw stones, and a time to collect stones. It seems that these words are taken literally here, and some unknown forces gathered all the boulders in the vicinity, and then placed many residential buildings among them. Perhaps this is one of the most amazing corners of Andalusia.
Setenil de las Bodegas has long been famous for its unique geographical position: most of the houses are literally "cut" into the rocks, built by expanding natural caves. A similar picture can be seen only in Bolivia, where the city of Le Paz "grew" in the crater of an extinct volcano.
Historical records indicate that Setenil de las Bodegas is an ancient settlement. Its inhabitants became famous thanks to military courage, they staunchly protected the city from numerous attacks of Roman soldiers, who in the 1st century. AD managed to enter the city only after a 15-day siege. Scientists believe that the etymology of the name "Setenil" is associated with military events: this word comes from "septem nihil", which literally means "seven times without result." This was the number of unsuccessful attacks by the Romans, in which the inhabitants of the city managed to withstand. The second part of the name "de las Bodegas" appeared later, thanks to the abundant production of valuable varieties of wine, which the area is still famous for. It is noteworthy that the first vineyards were planted in this area by Christians in addition to the olive and almond groves that grew here. Over the years, Setenil de las Bodegas has become popular not only for its winemaking, this city has the best "meat" reputation in the region, numerous bars and restaurants serve excellent pork dishes.
