In the very last week of August, the annual "Tomato Festival" commemorates the outgoing summer in Bunol, in eastern Spain. Like all Spanish festivals, this one comes with festive fireworks, music, dancing and free treats. But the festival also has one distinctive feature that attracts crowds of tourists to Bunyol, it is the culmination of the festival - the tomato battle (La Tomatina), taking place in the town square. This year, the tomato massacre will take place on 25 August.
According to the rules, the festival begins only after someone climbs onto a 2-story wooden pole, previously greased with soap. A worthy reward awaits the daredevil at the top - a pork leg, and for everyone around it this serves as a signal to start a battle. In this insane battle, the target can be anyone within reach, the main task of the participants is to shoot tomatoes at the neighbor, and who they will be is not so important. Considering that there are about forty thousand people taking part in this fun, and the number of shells is estimated at hundreds of tons of tomatoes, it is easy to imagine what the city square and the city's residents will turn into in a few minutes after the start of the tomato shootout. Tomatina ends when a volley of water cannons is fired into the sky, after which the participants can wash themselves in the river, or local residents dump them from hoses.
Tomatina is a unique event that has no analogues. So, if you are lacking new experiences and you are not afraid to get dirty, then head to Spain at the end of August and take part in the last festival of the summer.
