"There is strength - no mind is needed" - this stereotype can often be heard about outstanding strongmen. Career of a Russian athlete Georg Gackenschmidt completely refutes this statement: the famous bodybuilder not only received outstanding physical abilities from birth, but also developed a love for philosophy. In the ring he was called the "Russian lion", he managed to win 3,000 sports competitions in 10 years. After leaving the big sport, he began to write books and give open lectures …
Georg Gakkenschmidt is from Tartu. Since childhood, he was fond of sports, at the age of 15 he decided to quit his studies and earn a living on his own, went to work as an assistant to a boiler operator, and devoted all his free time to physical training. For the first time, he decided to demonstrate his abilities at the age of 19, speaking in competitions, he managed to show impressive results (bench press weighing up to 89, 8 kg was a considerable achievement for a novice athlete). Georg is rightly called one of the strongest people in Tallinn (the strong man lives in this city at this time), but he is not going to stop there.
Thanks to an annoying nuisance, Georg was able to professionally engage in strength training, once at a competition he injured his hand and was treated by the famous doctor Vladislav Kraevsky. It was Kraevsky who appreciated the promising guy and invited him to move to the northern capital. During this period, intensive training begins, during which the lifting of weights was mastered and the methods of struggle were improved. The first serious victories of Georg Gackenschmidt were impressive: he managed to defeat the French strongman Paul Pons, who wore the title of world champion, and also to bypass another legendary Russian Yevgeny Sandov in the press with one hand. Soon, Georg also set a world record in the press with two hands.
"Russian Lion" tried to concentrate his attention on lifting weights, but the old shoulder injury constantly made itself felt, then it was decided to bet on the fight. Georg wins all possible competitions in Russia, goes to international competitions, performs in America and Europe. Biographers say that, despite his outstanding abilities, the strong man was in need of money for a long time, he found a stable income in England, so he decided to stay in this country.
Georg's sports career lasted 10 years, starting to lose in competitions, but realized that it was time to leave the sports arena. In England he developed a close friendship with Bernard Shaw and began to write and publish books himself. It is noteworthy that all his publications were of a practical nature, the athlete shared his own experience, told how to achieve success. "How to Live", "The Complete Doctrine of Struggle", "Consciousness and Character" - these and other books were popular with readers, while the author actively spoke in European universities with open lectures.
Georg Gackenschmidt made a name for himself in the sports arena, when bodybuilding was already gaining popularity with might and main, we recall that the first jock in history recognized Evgeny Sandov, an athlete who was truly in love with his body and constantly strived to improve it.
