Today, December 12, Fedor Konyukhov turns 65. The outstanding traveler visited both the North and South Poles, became the first Russian to conquer the seven highest peaks of the world, and the first person in the world to reach all five poles of the planet, including the Pole of Relative Inaccessibility in the Arctic Ocean, Everest and Cape Horn (pole yachtsmen)! In his personal standings - land and sea expeditions and, of course, round the world! About the brightest moments of the biography of Fedor Konyukhov - in our review.
1. North Pole
Since childhood, Fyodor Konyukhov dreamed of the sea, dreamed of travel and admired the courage and fearlessness of the discoverers who set off on the most dangerous expeditions on sailing yachts. Fired up with the dream of repeating their travels, Fedor Konyukhov in 1977 repeats the route once taken by Vitus Bering. Later on a sailing ship he goes to Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and Chukotka. During the expeditions, Konyukhov acquired all the skills for surviving in the ice desert: he knew how to build a temporary shelter, deal with extremely low temperatures, and ride in a sled. Twice Konyukhov came to the North Pole as part of expeditionary groups, and then decided on an independent campaign, which lasted 72 days and was crowned with success. The independent conquest of the North Pole in 1990 became a precedent in the history of mankind.
2. South Pole
Fedor Konyukhov went to Antarctica 5 years later. Already an experienced traveler, he correctly calculated the forces, and reached the cherished goal on the 59th day. He embodied his impressions of the conquest of the South Pole in a fiction book about Antaktida. In addition, during the expedition, he constantly kept a diary, observing his own condition in conditions of low temperature and high pressure. One of the achievements of Konyukhov in this expedition was the conquest of the Vinson Massif, the highest point of Antarctica (5140 m). Interestingly, before Fedor Konyukhov, no one had overcome such a route, it was believed that it was practically impossible physically. However, the trip to Antarctica turned out to be so expensive that Konyukhov decided to ascend immediately after conquering the South Pole. The savings were justified: the traveler won not only in material terms, but also tolerated the ascent well, since his body had already been acclimatized. True, this expedition did not go without an incident: due to bad weather, the helicopter that arrived to pick up Konyukhov could not find the traveler for three days.
3. Seven peaks of the world
The route of the seven highest peaks in the world includes Elbrus (Europe), Everest (Asia), Vinson Massif (Antarctica), Akongkagua (South America) and Kilimanjaro Volcano (Africa), Kostsyushko Peak (Australia) and McKinley (North America). Five ascents from this list were independent.
4. Travel around the world
Despite all the "mountain" achievements, Fyodor Konyukhov's vocation is the sea. In total, he made more than 40 sea expeditions, and even became a world record holder, as he managed to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat in 46 days!
The maximum voyage of Konyukhov lasted 508 days. A traveler, talking about water routes, emphasizes that the ocean is deserted, and the belief that rescuers will come to the rescue at the first trouble is false. During his travels, Konyukhov met ships a few times, and the rest of the time he remembered only that he had nowhere to wait for help.
Konyukhov distinguished himself by the fact that he passed Cape Horn five times. It is believed that the independent passage of this cape in terms of load is equivalent to climbing Mount Everest in conditions when the climber is deprived of oxygen. Konyukhov passed the Horn five times, and we will hardly ever know how much effort it cost him.
In total, the Konyukhov yacht traveled a distance of 380 thousand miles, which corresponds to the distance between the Moon and the Earth. He cares about the environment - he travels on skis, sledges, yachts or boats, as well as on a bicycle or on horseback or a camel. Oceans, ice and mountain ranges have already been conquered by Konyukhov, his new hobby is deserts. We are sure that on this path, the researcher will have many more discoveries!
Fyodor Konyukhov's expeditions are among 10 most unusual round-the-world travels!
