Until recently, Leonardo DiCaprio retained the status of an Oscar loser: over and over again the coveted statuette went to rivals. How can we not sympathize with the loser, even if he is one of the most recognizable and highly paid actors of our time? By the way, even in this dubious achievement - to be nominated, but not to receive the Academy award, DiCaprio lost to another "record holder".
No age restrictions
The youngest actress to be awarded an Academy Award is Shirley Temple, who was only seven years old at the time of the award. It happened back in 1934, when the name "Oscar" was not yet associated with a gold statuette. The nickname stuck to the figure only in the forties, but who exactly became this godparent is not known exactly. Either the actress Bette Davis came up with the idea, or the executive secretary of the Academy saw the familiar features of her uncle Oscar in the gilded face.
Shirley Temple received a statuette for her role in Shining Eyes, the now defunct Youth Academy Awards category. But in the category "Best Actress" the youngest of the awardees is considered to be Marlee Matlin, she received a statuette for her role in the 1986 film "Children of a Lesser God." Christopher Plummer became the oldest actor awarded for a supporting role. He received the statuette at the age of 82, starring in the movie "Beginners".
And in the nominations "Best Actor" and "Best Actress" the oldest were Henry Fonda (received the statuette at 76) and Jessica Tandy (was awarded at 80). Tandy, whose career has been more in theater than cinema, is also best known for her role as Mrs. Brenner in the Hitchcock thriller "Birds." Among those celebrating the centenary are five actors and actresses: Louise Rainer, owner of two statuettes as the best actress, lived 104 years, George Burns, whose acting career was 94 years, died at the age of one hundred years.
Gloria Stewart, known for her role of the aged Rose in the film "Titanic", lived the same century - a century - she was inscribed in the history of the Oscar as a nominee for the best supporting role - in this film. Kirk Douglas, who received the statuette for a distinguished career, lived 103 years, and Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie in Gone with the Wind and winner of two Oscars, died at the age of 104.
Who has the most Oscars and no-win nominations?
Currently, the Oscar is awarded in 24 main nominations, and six more are special. The previously mentioned Honorary Oscar is one of these special awards. Some categories, such as Best Credits or Best Single Reel Short Film, are now a thing of the past.
Walt Disney, an animator, director, producer, screenwriter and actor, is recognized as the luckiest among those who have been awarded special recognition by the Academy. He has been nominated for the award 59 times, winning 26 times. Among the living winner of the statuettes, the record holder is special effects director Dennis Muren, who worked on the films Terminator 2: Doomsday, Jurassic Park, the Star Wars saga and many other films. Muren has won nine gold Oscars so far - awards for the best visual effects.
Of course, in any classification, a separate role is still assigned to "female" achievements - and the most successful among the beautiful half of humanity in terms of film career turned out to be costume designer Edith Head. Of the thirty-five Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design, Edith has won eight times. The career of this artist is truly impressive - over the decades of work in the industry, she has had the opportunity to come up with outfits for Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and other wonderful film stars.
The first and only woman so far to receive an Oscar for directing was Catherine Bigelow with her brainchild The Hurt Locker, in 2009. her sixty-year career as Katharine Hepburn. By the way, the same actress holds another record - the longest period between nominations for the award, which was 48 years.
One statuette less for the actor, three times recognized as the best by the Academy, - Daniel Day Lewis. And Walter Brennan was named the best supporting actor three times - this is also a record. As for the anti-record - if you consider it a failure to get into the list of nominees multiple times, even without winning the category, then Leonardo DiCaprio was not the one who had to applaud the rivals the most times. The actor failed six times before winning an Oscar for his leading role in The Survivor, but Peter O'Toole, familiar to viewers in the image of Lawrence of Arabia, was nominated eight times but never won. True, in 2003 the actor received the coveted statuette, but in a special nomination - "Oscar" for outstanding services in cinema.
But then the actors, but the composer Thomas Newman was nominated 14 times for the Oscar for the best song and best music for a film - and all 14 times he left the awards ceremony with nothing.
Record-breaking films
The most exciting Oscar category is the selection of the best film. It is believed that this decision was dictated by many factors that are far from the art of cinema itself - for example, in recent decades, the participation in a film of black actors or the raising of acute social issues is often the key to success. All members of the Film Academy vote for the best film, in contrast to voting in other categories, where the best actor, for example, is chosen by the guild of actors.
A film can be recognized as the best only once, but sometimes it adds others to its main and most prestigious award - for the best screenplay, best cinematography, and so on. There is the concept of "Big Five" - these are 5 awards received by the creators and crew of the film: for the best motion picture, for direction, script, as well as "Oscars" for the best male and female actors. There are three such record-breaking films: It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
In just one film, as the history of the award shows, it was possible to collect up to 11 statuettes - this is the number of victories in the nominations that record-holders can boast of: Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). The last film is also remarkable in that the victory was won in all the categories in which it was nominated. The Oscars, which were usually held in February, in 2021 will take place at the end of April. Whether to see new records - time will tell.
