Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other hieroglyphs seem to people accustomed to the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet to be something completely incomprehensible, mysterious. But each of these signs at one time was based on a graphic representation of one or another concept. True, now it is already difficult to believe in it.

But the Taiwanese artist Shao Lian undertook to explain to the representatives of other cultures the most popular Chinese characters and how to build each word on their basis.

Shao Lian took hieroglyphs such as "mouth", "mountain", "moon", "tree", "man", "door", "sunrise" and "fire", and turned each of them into a picture with the corresponding content, so that people can see on the basis of which this or that sign appeared.

And then the author of the Chineasy project began to play with these hieroglyphs, adding different signs to them in order to get new meanings from the original. For example, based on the hieroglyph "door", you can get the words "space", "boss", "close", "lock", "evade", "ask" and "open".

The hieroglyphs "hot", "burn", "extinguish", "clear", "eat" or "chew", "fried" and "heat" come from the symbol "fire".

Shao Lian gives similar lists for the other words mentioned.

And, having familiarized people with these hieroglyphs”, the Taiwanese artist proceeds to the process of creating more complex words and concepts with their help. Shao Lian, as part of the Chineasy project, created an animated comic, in which you can see that the characters "fire" and "mountain", written together, create the character "volcano", and "fire" and "tree" - "forest fire".

Having taught eight simple hieroglyphs to people who were accustomed to Latin, the artist allowed them to read the whole story about how a man went for a walk in the forest, saw a fire there and burned down on the side of a mountain, which he wanted to climb in search of salvation.

And to understand all this, it will take each of us only a few minutes, even if we have never encountered the Chinese language before.
