"Matches are not toys for children!" - which of us has not heard this well-known phrase and has not repeated it himself? Scottish author David Mach is no longer a child, but still continues to play with fire, creating literally flammable sculptures.

The author created the first sculpture from matches back in 1982, and since then his collection has been replenished with dozens of new works made of wooden sticks with multi-colored heads. Among the author's works are images of animals, Buddha, African masks and much more. But the first sculpture of David, unfortunately, burned down. They say that it happened either by mistake or by oversight, but there is nothing surprising, in general, if you remember the material from which it was made.

The creative process is quite laborious, because the author has to peck each match on a glass or plastic base, and it takes tens of thousands to create just one sculpture of these matches! It usually takes David several months to put all the pieces together.

“I try to use familiar things in my work, such as matches, because people know exactly what they are. These objects are in the life of each of us, but often we do not notice them,”says David.

David's sculptures are quite fragile, because any of them can burn out in a few seconds. But what's interesting is that the author doesn't really care. Moreover, sometimes he himself sets fire to one or the other of his work at the opening of the exhibition to achieve a more dramatic effect. The audience likes it. And the master himself says that the main thing for him is the process of creating sculptures. David Mach was born in Scotland in 1956. Now he lives and works in London.
