Diego L. Rodriguez is a talented Spanish designer and photographer. His latest experimental project combines various performance techniques with which he has managed to create psychedelic illustrations.
The author shared his comments about this series of works:
- Do you remember your first creative successes? What played a decisive role in choosing the creative path as the main activity?
I think that in the early stages, Japanese comics and animations piqued my creative interest. When I was a child, I wanted to create something unusual based on these images. My favorite Japanese show was called. In addition, every weekend my family bought magazines for children with colorful illustrations and comics. Later, music videos and cinema became my passion. I dreamed of being a film director or writing music. So I decided to start researching my area of interest in more detail: at the age of 16, I started working at a local television station.
The beginning of the next stage of my creative path began a little later, when digital graphics changed my understanding of art. I found something really unique for myself, insanely exciting and worthwhile to devote a part of my life to this.
- How would you describe your style of work?
It is difficult to answer this question because I am constantly experimenting. Even if the result is not what I expected, it will serve as a new start or a continuation of further research and discoveries.
- What advice would you give to young talented people who have chosen the same career for themselves?
I think it's very important to be productive, to work every day, constantly doing something new and improving your skills. Learning about different cultures and new techniques is an integral part of my work.
- What inspires you at this stage of your career?
Various things, I'm not looking for anything specific. It could be a book, a song, or a person I met 5 minutes ago. Today is one thing, but let's say in 3 months the sources of my inspiration will be completely different.
- What projects are you working on at the moment? Do you have a favorite project and what are your memories of it?
More often than not, I get typical orders like album covers, brand logos, specific illustrations of clothes. I really enjoy working with musicians. These are amazingly open people with whom there is a mutual exchange of ideas and concepts, which in turn makes the project more creative and enjoyable. Of course, I have memories, for example, from working with HBO: there were a lot of ideas, motivation and crazy pressure with side, so I did three times more work than I was asked to do. I also remember collaborating with the artist for whose album I did the cover. First Neo gave me an album so that I could make my own impression, and only after that I combined it with the ideas of the author.
- Where do you prefer to work? Describe your workplace.
Basic desk, Macbook Pro 15, wireless keyboard and ergonomic chair. There are always a couple of books on the table, a notebook, a few pencils and pens, and a cup of coffee or tea. I prefer to work indoors with at least one window. There is a park near my house, it is very important for me to spend enough time in the fresh air, clear my mind and gather with new strength.
How do you envision your career in the next 5-10 years?
I imagine myself in a house by the sea - enjoying the nature around me and working on my own series of illustrations. I would not mind creating my own coffee brand, for example, or participating in charity. I really want my energy not to fade away with age.
How do you spend your free time?
When I think I need to clear my mind, I go for a walk in the park, listening to the sounds around me, breathing clean air with a pen and notebook in hand to take notes from time to time. Lately I've been trying to write music, I also study Japanese, go to the gym, read parapsychology books, and sometimes just lie on the floor and think about what I want to experiment with in my work.
Designer Ayaka Ito also demonstrates professional skills in modern technology by creating amazing wire sculptures.
