New York photographer Klaus Enrique Gerdes decided to repeat the success of the famous Italian mannerist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who, as the court painter of Emperor Maximilian II, created amazing portraits entirely composed of vegetables, fruits, flowers, fish, crustaceans, pearls, and other available items.
At first, Gerdes did not even know about the existence of the great Italian painter. Once during an open-air shoot, focusing on the face of one of the models standing in the midst of the greenery, Klaus thought: “It would be nice if the girl’s face was completely made of leaves - a kind of green mask made of organic elements!” Gerdes decided to tackle the issue more closely and conduct a real cultural research. On the Internet, he met the works of the famous court mannerist and decided to recreate them. Later he got the idea to develop the work of the classic, adding several popular images of our days.
“It's amazing,” says the photographer, “but viewers do not always immediately understand that my photographs are portraits, not still lifes. Honestly, many of them think that I am making abstract compositions of flowers and fruits! Many of them need a lot of time, and some - even a hint to finally understand that I actually portrayed a person or a popular character."
The creation of each such portrait for Herdes takes about three days. This is not an easy job, because if Archimboldo could afford complete improvisation, it is important for Gerdes to select each element especially carefully so that the final result is as close to the original as possible. “In some sources I found information that Archimboldo painted fruits and vegetables with great precision, not allowing himself any artistic transformations. I dare to assure you that this was hardly the case. Several times I was convinced from my own experience that the proportions of some fruits are distorted in favor of the harmony of the image. Often I had to replace pears with potatoes in order to keep the right proportions elementary."
Herdes' colleague, American Philip Haas, creates striking fiberglass sculptures based on the works of the Italian. The three-meter giants are a reproduction of the work "The Four Seasons" by the classic of mannerism Archimboldo.
