Photographer Ed Wheeler - still that joker. For New Year's greetings, he often arranges comic photo shoots in the image of Santa Claus and then sends out original postcards to relatives and friends. A couple of years ago, he decided that Santa would look good on the canvases of famous artists. This is how the idea of the project was born "Santa Classics".
The original project started in 2011, and during this time Ed Wheeler managed to "transform" many examples of classical painting. The immortal creations of the impressionists Claude Monet and Edgar Dagh came into the photographer's field of vision. This is how the plots of the paintings were born, in which you can see Santa on the lake with water lilies and in a ballet class. True, there are more heroic creations, for example, Santa Claus in the image of Napoleon by Jacques-Louis David.
One of the most daring experiments is Sandro Botticelli's New Year's variations on the theme of The Birth of Venus. Instead of the naked goddess of love, Ed Wheeler himself suddenly appears in the picture in a tight red leotard with a traditional hat and, of course, a thick beard. The photographer himself is sure that such transformations will make the audience smile and, moreover, will be an excellent occasion to remember classical art.
Whimsical images of Santa Claus can be ordered as exclusive New Year cards from the Philadelphia Museum of Art Online Store. Of course, on the eve of the holidays, the original idea will not go unnoticed!
