The Winter Olympics in Sochi-2014 promises to become not only the most expensive in the history of such events, but also the largest in terms of the number of competitions in different disciplines, as well as the number of participating countries. We have prepared a review of foreign commemorative coins dedicated to the Sochi Olympics.
Each Olympic Games becomes a global event, uniting and inspiring people from all over our planet. Moreover, interest in the competition is shown even in countries that are not participants in the Olympiad.
The first to hurry up were the guys from the island state of Niue, the existence of which most of the inhabitants of the Earth do not even suspect. Back in 2008, by order of Niue, the Polish Mint (the islands are too small and poor to have their own mint) minted two types of Olympic silver coins weighing 26, 15 grams. and the denomination of 1 dollar Niue. The first of the coins is decorated with a relief image of the Sochi seaport, the second shows the airport building. The reverse side bears an image of a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
To some, the idea of the islanders may seem ridiculous and funny. However, for a small state that does not have any serious sources of income, the sale of commemorative Olympic coins will be a good option for replenishing the country's budget.
Following the Pacific Islands, the upcoming Winter Olympics 2014 were remembered in France, where in the spring of 2011 at the Paris mint made of gold (weight 8.45 g, diameter 22 mm, circulation - 1000 pcs.) And silver (weight 22.2 g, diameter 37 mm, circulation - 10,000) commemorative coins were minted "Figure skating" in denominations of 50 and 10 euros, respectively. The choice of this sport is not surprising, because figure skating appeared at the Olympic Games back in 1908 in London and has been one of the most popular disciplines at the Olympics for over a hundred years.
The image on the obverse of commemorative coins is composed of several expressive symbols, the main of which is a pair of figure skaters frozen in a dance. Probably in this way the Bank of France decided to remind everyone of the glorious traditions of figure skating in this country. On the left side there is an image of nesting dolls over the blade of a skate. It is difficult to say what idea the authors put into this image. Perhaps this is how, in their opinion, spectators may look in the stands of the Sochi Ice Palace, or perhaps this is a hint of rivals from the host country of the Olympics. But on the reverse of the coins, a stylized globe with the location of the city of Sochi marked with a dot became the background for the figure skater who triumphantly raised her hands up.
The upcoming Olympics in Sochi were not ignored by the closest neighbors. In autumn 2012, the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus put into circulation commemorative coins minted in Germany 2014 Olympic Games. Ski race … In total, five thousand twenty-ruble silver coins weighing 28, 28 grams and a diameter of 38, 61 mm, seven hundred and fifty one hundred-ruble silver coins weighing 155.5 grams and a diameter of 65 mm were minted, as well as one and a half thousand gold coins weighing 3, 11 grams, with a diameter of 16 mm and a denomination of twenty rubles.
The coins are dedicated to the winter discipline, in which athletes from Belarus are traditionally strong. The reverse is decorated with a relief image of competing skiers. The obverse bears the coat of arms of the Republic of Belarus and the denomination of the coin.
In 2013, the Paris Mint continued its numismatic series dedicated to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, minting commemorative coins in gold and silver on the topic "Snowboarding" … The denomination, size and weight of the new coins are identical to the coins from the first issue. Circulation - 2000 and 10,000 pieces, respectively.
It is noteworthy that in this case, French money contains an inscription in Russian. On the obverse of the coin, on the reverse side of the jumping snowboarder's board, there is a graffiti-stylized inscription “Paris Mint”. Behind the athlete, the globe is again depicted, which marks the location of the city of Sochi, which will host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Continuing the "Russian theme", the designers placed another figure of a snowboarder on the reverse of the coins against the background of abstract images reminiscent of the domes of an Orthodox church.
In the same year, the Government of the Isle of Man, which is the crown domain of Great Britain, announced the issue of four commemorative coins to mark the opening of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Coins of silver and copper-nickel alloy with a weight of 21 grams and a denomination of 1 krone were minted in the UK. Each coin is dedicated to a separate sports discipline from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games program - figure skating, luge, curling, alpine skiing. The obverse of all four coins adorns the profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain.
