Ryan Novelline is an American painter, fashion designer and designer living in Boston. And he is also a person who has not forgotten about a happy childhood and once beloved fairy tales. And not only didn’t forget, but decided to share these memories with us, using pictures from old collapsed books into a fashionable business. The result is a truly fabulous dress - an outfit for a young princess-book reader.
More than once we have had to make sure that the imagination of designers is inexhaustible: they either design dresses out of paper, or invent hybrid shoes. Here's another reason to marvel at the invention of creative people. As you know, books often inspire designers to experiment. Think of the marvelous costumes for the film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland that made a splash last year. And the series of children's editions "Little Golden Books" served as material for the work of Ryan Novelline - and material in the literal sense of the word.
The Little Golden Books in America are not just brightly illustrated editions, but practically a living legend. They began to be produced back in 1942. The first copies sold for only 25 cents, so at last colorful children's reading became available not only to wealthy families. For 70 years, according to publishers, more than two billion "golden books" have been sold.
What a pity grips my heart when you realize that once beloved books, practically childhood friends, can no longer be restored. Is it really possible to carry them to the trash heap or sell priceless editions to waste paperworkers - for a pittance? Fashion designer Ryan Novelline took a different route. Having gutted the books, he cut off the dilapidated corners and removed other things that were unpleasant to the eye. Then he carefully sewed the sheets with strong metal threads.
The result was a huge paper canvas with an unusual print, somewhat childish and perky. Large drawings (and only such drawings are tried to be placed in children's publications) are expressive and bright. They set you up for a playful mood and promise a journey into a fairy tale. In order to make such a fluffy skirt, the designer needed as many as 14 square meters of illustrated "fabric".
The “production wastes” - the foil-covered spines of children's editions - were not ignored either. They went to the bodice of the dress. The outfit was complemented by a wide border around the edges - so that the paper construction for the glory of a happy childhood does not disintegrate and the top does not bulge too much.
