2020 was far from the best year in the history of world cinema. But some films managed not only to appear on the big screens, but also to win the hearts of viewers around the world. The British Broadcasting Organization, the BBC, teamed up with BBC Culture film critics Nicholas Barber and Karin James to select this year's Top 10 Films, featuring some of the brightest films released in late 2019 and the first half of 2020.

Da 5 Bloods, USA, directed by Spike Lee

According to British critics, the new creation of the American director undoubtedly deserves attention. A dramatic film about the horrors of the Vietnam War, PTSD and politics. The film clearly shows a very prejudiced attitude of the director towards the current president of the United States. Critics around the world greeted the film with enthusiasm, although some viewers noted that people far from politics may be somewhat disappointed by the apparent political overtones of the picture.

The Personal History of David Copperfield, UK, USA, director Armando Iannucci

The director called his film "joyful and inventive, raising the bar for film adaptations of the works of Charles Dickens to the next level." Despite the fact that the British comedy itself is a rather specific thing for the domestic viewer, the film by Armando Iannucci turned out to be actually quite lively and vivid.

"Never, rarely, sometimes, always", ("Never Rarely Sometimes Always"), UK, USA, director Eliza Hittman

Stunning in its sincerity story of two teenage girls from Pennsylvania, faced with the frustration and the need to get rid of the pregnancy of one of them. The scriptwriter and director tries to convey the state of mind of young girls who have to make a difficult choice, perhaps the first in their life. How not to make a mistake and make the right decision, if your own future is on one of the scales, and everything that has been in life until now is on the other.

"The Hunt", USA, directed by Craig Zobel

Comedy thriller about a gang of privileged liberals who kidnap some "rightists". The film caused a lot of controversy even before its premiere, which was postponed for a year, and the "Hunt" itself was criticized by US President Donald Trump. Nevertheless, the picture was released just before the closure of cinemas. Many found the film a clever satire and a caustic mirror of America's political division.

Bacurau, Brazil, France, directed by Juliano Dornel and Kleber Mendonça Filho

British film critics call "Bakurau" one of the strangest and most compelling films, such a "Brazilian gem". The film clearly feels the spirit of the western. It is not even spoiled by some of the cruelty and political component of the film, which takes place in a village that suddenly disappeared from all maps.

"The Assistant", USA, directed by Kitty Green

An insightful and rather violent drama unfolds in the New York office of an influential film mogul. The viewer will not hear loud speeches in the film and will not see harsh confrontations, but will feel how the tension of the protagonist is growing, ready either to come to terms with the role of a sexual object for a movie mogul desperately reminiscent of Harvey Weinstein, or to rebel against her boss.

"Emma." ("Emma."), UK, directed by Autumn de Wilde

Another adaptation by Jane Austen turned out to be very successful. The director of the film managed to achieve harmony in his immersion in the atmosphere of that era, and the characters from the first frames fascinate the viewer and do not give any opportunity to leave the screen before the final credits float across the screen.

The Vast of Night, USA, directed by Andrew Patterson

The action of this fantastic thriller with elements of a detective begins at the very moment when all the inhabitants of the small town of Cayuga in the state of New Mexico went to a match of their favorite basketball team. The film seems quite old-fashioned, but it will give the viewer the pleasant sensations and light aftertaste inherent in the novels of Ray Bradbury or the stories of Ted Chan.

The Painter and the Thief, Norway, directed by Benjamin Rea

The heroes of the documentary are the young artist Barbora Kisilkova and the thief Karl Bertil-Nordland, who stole from the gallery a famous work of art that belonged to the artist. Director Benjamin Rea has followed his subjects over the years to create a multi-layered, moving chronicle of inspiration, guilt and reinvention.

True History of the Kelly Gang, UK, France, Australia, directed by Justin Kurzel

The adaptation of Peter Carey's novel is a biography of the notorious outlaw Ned Kelly, whose brutality dates back to childhood. The director enhanced Kelly's character by making this personality more intimidating and wild. And yet, for some reason, the main character of the picture evokes sympathy.

Cinematography at any time can comfort the viewer, immersing him in an atmosphere of kindness and charm. The BBC recommends preparing a warm blanket for viewing, plenty of cookies or popcorn, and enjoy the best films that can give a sea of positive emotions.
