Sand castles are not the only thing that can be made from sand. Iranian craftsmen, for example, used this material to create a huge multi-colored carpet on the shores of the Persian Gulf. The carpet, showing traditional Persian designs, turned out to be the largest of its kind in the world.

Few people know that Tibetan monks have long and successfully used colored sand to create mandalas (mandala is the main magic diagram, widely used in Buddhist and Hindu Tantrism as a visual aid for contemplative practice). Apparently, it was from them that the artists of Iran spied the idea, but instead of a religious symbol they laid out the famous Persian carpet from the sand. The sand carpet turned out to be surprisingly similar to the real one - only exceeding it in size by several thousand times.

25 artists worked on the creation of a unique carpet measuring 12 thousand square meters. To make this beauty, it took 70 types of colored sand found on the shores of Hormuz Island, widely known for its red soils. The carpet even received a name, although not particularly original - "Persian Gulf".

The carpet was created in December 2008 and was available for viewing for only 9 days. Still, sand products are too short-lived, no matter how beautiful they may be.
