The legendary cinematic villain, whom many viewers lovingly call Shang Tsung, has been a citizen of the Russian Federation for several years. This decision of the foreign actor did not surprise his friends, because back in 2010, Tagawa showed ardent love for our country - he took part in the program "Let's Get Married" on Channel One, where he was picked up by a Russian bride. The Hollywood star did not succeed in a serious relationship with her, but, apparently, Russia really got attached to his heart.
Kari-Hiroyuki Tagawa belongs to an old Japanese family, but his mother was expelled from the family for the dream of acting in films. She became the wife of a military man, and the family emigrated to America. Carey went to school and began to practice karate and kendo. In the future, his path for many years was very far from the cinema: the young man worked part-time in a farm, as a truck and limousine driver, a pizza delivery man and a photojournalist.
When his father died of cancer, Tagawa was angry with the whole world and most of all with the doctors, who, in his opinion, showed their impotence. Then the young man developed a unique healing technique for several years. As the actor himself explains, it is based on the balance of blood circulation and respiration, which leads to one hundred percent use of the human lungs. Healing is still the most important occupation for Hiroyuki, to which he devotes a lot of time.
Tagawa's cinematic debut took place quite late, in 1986, when he was 36 years old. In an interview, the actor explained this fact as follows:
The actor is incredibly law-abiding, however, due to his characteristic appearance, for a long time he played only villains - the leaders of the Yakuza or dark sorcerers. True, in his opinion, it was this demand for type that helped him in the early years to move forward in the difficult Hollywood race, which constantly weeds out hundreds of beautiful and talented young actors.
Tagawa began with cameo roles in action films, but gradually eminent directors began to offer him roles. For a couple of decades, he starred in many famous films: Memoirs of a Geisha, Pearl Harbor, Mortal Kombat, License to Kill, Rescuers Malibu, Gemini, 47 Ronin and Hachiko … The actor admits that he is tired of playing negative characters, so he always rejoices when he gets out of the image that has stuck to him. However, in recent years he has succeeded more and more often.
In 2015, the famous Hollywood actor took part in a Russian project. The film titled "Priest-San" was filmed according to a script by Ivan Okhlobystin and Roman Vladykin. An unusual story tells about the fate of the priest of the Japanese Orthodox Church, Father Nicholas, it was this role that was played by Carei-Hiroyuki Tagawa. True, it was not without the Yakuza here, but for the American actor, this work was a turning point. After the premiere, he announced his desire to convert to Orthodoxy and link his life with Russia:
On November 12, 2015, in Moscow, in the Sorrowful Church on Bolshaya Ordynka, Tagawa received Orthodox baptism with the name Panteleimon. The actor does not live in Russia permanently, but studies Orthodox rituals with great attention.
